word count

Has anybody had a wrong new word count in a report? I estimate that I have translated about 1000 words more than what is in the report.

Question... not discussion.

I think it can be common that users think the word count in the report is less or more than they thought based on what their client advised, but I'm not sure I have heard of users translating a different amount to what was in the report.  Can you explain a bit more how you know this?  What kind of report did you run?  Is the report in the same project as the original file prepared for translation?  Were there segments excluded from the count that you may have translated anyway?  Were there more files in the project and you're comparing the analysis of one file while translating more that have been opened as one?

Too much guessing really and I think we need more context to provide a sensible response here.

  • Hi Paul,

I did not perform the analysis, the client did and I am pretty new at this (Trados) so I don't have all the details or the expertise needed. All I know is that I spent 4 10-hour days translating 3500 words (supposedly) and I am usually much faster than this! I also downloaded Trados Analyse and I am getting the same results than my client. I am wondering if the "context matches" have anything to do with it, but I don't really know what it means.

I have been using Logiterm for years though and the report that I got shows a huge difference in the data.

I am enclosing links to both reports so that you can see what I mean.

    Thanks for your help!

You haven't attached any reports.  I suggest you zip both files and then attach them to your reply using the Insert -> Image/Video/File menu.

  • Ok, let's try these.

ok - thanks for these reports.  I see the following:

    Overall Wordcount
    Studio - 6105 words
    LogiTrans - 6085 words

So the overall wordcount reported is similar enough and I don't see huge differences.

    New Words
    Studio - 2213 words
    LogiTrans - 4357 words

These would be the words that you need to translate that are not in your Translation Memory.  Here there seems to be less than in your LogiTrans report, but then we don't know how you got this?  Where did the TM come from that was used to create this report?

We also don't know if you have access to the same TM that your client used to create this report.  If you don't have then you won't benefit from the leverage shown in the Studio report and could well have more words to translate .

I could go on and carry on comparing but I really see little point in that exercise because it's already clear that you cannot compare these two reports as they are clearly created with completely different resources.  The import questions I would be asking are these:

    1. are you getting paid on the basis of the report your customer created?
    2. if you are then can you create a similar report with the resources you have available to do the project to make sure that you are both basing the money you get paid on the same thing?

    That's it... probably.

  • Yes I did use the same TM as my client and I am getting paid for the word count that she provided.

I think I will let this one go, as I have no way of proving what I am saying.

    Thanks for all your help!
