Why just switching to the Translation Memories tab takes so long?

For years now, just switching to the Translation Memory in Studio takes an eternity. OK, let's say minutes. But it's way too long, if you consider that it also locks my Studio interface and makes me unable to do anything during that time.

I have to mention I always have the latest updated versions, and that Studio is necessarily uninstalled then reinstalled at each new update.

So why, just opening that tab (I even do not try to access to a specific memory) is that long? Actually, when Studio gives me back the hand, I can open any memory in a couple of seconds, but I cannot figure why just opening a tab is that long...

This definitely doesn't sound right.  I added around 50 TMs to my navigation pane in the Translation Memories View and tested tested a little (no sound... it's late!).  Whilst the Beta Manager, Reports view are pretty sluggish (as we know) the Translation Memories View is almost instant... ish.

It may be worth doing some testing with your security software switched off, and maybe also note where all these resources are stored.  Just guessing but perhaps you store them on OneDrive (or similar) and you have it set to only pull down from the cloud for use when you activate them.  So that could mean Studio can only see the footprint and tries to download them before presenting them in the list without spinning.

Does this happen after you have done it the first time, or every time one after the other as I just did in the video?  If not then synching is most likely, but if so then I'd check your security software and mke sure that it's configured correctly to exclude the Trados Studio application from scanning.

  • Hi Paul,
Sorry, I did not see your answer.

No, my TMs are stored in my usual working drive.

The issue only happens the first time I access to the tab. The tab opens, and the list of memories shows. The issue arises when I click on a memory : the software does not give me the hand back before minutes (actually, I have enough time to make a coffee, no joke). Afterwards, everything goes right.

And as you know, I unistall-reinstall Studio twice a year, with every service release, so it does not stem from an older or corrupted installation.

As to my security software, it is merely Microsoft Defender, so it is not an exotic solution.

Anyway, I just made the test: I disabled the antivirus, then launched Studio, then clicked on the TMs tab. To this point, no problem, the list of memories showed quickly. But as soon as I selected a memory (in this case an only 6784 TUs one, thus a small one), that is just left-clicking on it (not double-clicking or right-clicking, that is I do not initiate any action), the hourglass displayed, the HD started to work noisily and I lost control of Studio for 2 min 40, according to my watch.

After that, I was able to switch between tabs without any other issue.

Then, for the test to be complete, I shutdown Studio (I checked in the task manager there is no trace of trados, studio, sdl or rws), then restarted it. And everything worked as expected from there.

I cannot do it right now, but you can be sure it will happen again if I reboot the computer. Actually, I did not restarted my computer for days, and I used Studio in the past days, accessing to the said tab. Yet, I had the issue again when I did the test some minutes ago. It is like if, after a while, some connection to memories disappeared.

And once again, I even do not try to make any action on the translation memory, such as trying to open it. I just select it in the list, which means I even do not request an access to the file...

I had a quick chat with the dev team to get some advice on this and he noted that accessing the TM's is resource that mostly consumes HDD and the fact that it's noisy for you suggests it's getting used heavily. Can you advise whether or not you are using a computer with SSD as opposed to HDD?

It could be that the reason I cannot reproduce this is because I'm using SSD that not only offers significantly faster data access, boot times, and file transfer speeds compared to HDDs due to the lack of moving parts, but it also provides for quicker load times and it's quieter.

Perhaps you can also check and see that you have adequate RAM and that your disk has sufficient free space.  It would also be worth excluding Trados and TM Directories from antivirus scanning, even if it's just Microsoft Defender.
