Absolutely, you can update your source document in Trados Studio 2021 and continue translating the new parts you add. Here's how you can do it:

I'm sorry to hear that you're still having trouble. It seems like the file might be in a state that doesn't allow for changes. In this case, you can try a workaround using the SDLXLIFF Converter for Microsoft Office. Here's how you can do it:

Step 1: Go to Start > All Programs > SDL Trados Studio Apps > SDLXLIFF Converter for Microsoft Office.

Step 2: Once you have the app open, click on "Import from MS Word".

Step 3: Click on "Add", then browse for the location of the bilingual file and open it in the app.

Step 4: Click on the icon with the three dots that is placed under "Updated DOCX".

Step 5: Click "Import" and once you receive the message "Conversion finished", the SDLXLIFF should be updated.

Please note that this app is installed alongside Trados Studio 2017 and earlier. If you are using Trados Studio 2019 or 2021, you need to install it from the RWS AppStore.

I think this thread is getting a bit off topic.  This last workaround will not help you with your problem as the app in question is designed for something else altogether.  However if you do want to install it and see what it does then you can choose to run it anyway by clicking the "Run anyway" button (in this case, the button that says "Esegui comunque").  The message is most likely due to your security settings being a bt strict.  If you downloaded this from the appstore it'll be fine.

The reason is most likely that your project is a "Single File Project".  This feature only works with a proper Studio Project created via the project wizard.  There are additional files required to support this operation and the single file project is a lightweight method of working.

Thank yo Paul ... So, from your point of view, how can I deal with my initial problem? I copy and attach here below my first question: 

 uploaded a word file to Trados 2021 and started to translate it (the "source document"). 

Now I need to continue writing on the same word source document. I would then like to continue translating on Trados the parts I need to add.
Is there a way to update the word source document uploaded to Trados so that the changes I make appear? This is to continue translating with the parts I add. to the source document and not split the document into two separate "single projects" (the one I already uploaded and a new one with the new parts that I am going to add, even if the source document is the same). 

Thank you for your help or...The Community's help! Please, it is urgent for me to solve this problem. I have to transalte 20 written pages and I have to copy them by hand into a Word file. I cannot scan them because the outcome would be a PDF file and Trados cannot read it properly (I already asked about this topic a few months ago and I unederstood that rewritng into a word is less timeconsuming than trying to make Trados read a PDF...)

My problems aren't finished though... Now, I started translating my Word source file as a "single document" not as a "project" (I am not used to creating projects because of the several webinars and tutorials I watched on Trados, where the expert generally translate as "single document"...Your advice to create a "project " is very useful but new to me...THANKS!)...

Another issue is that the BATCH function "pseudo translate" doesn't give any accettable result: the outcome is really inconsistent. Anyway, I can work without this function at the moment, even because the Legal translation needs a lot of revision...

If you had the professional version of Studio you could use Perfect Match to get everything on a par... but if not the solution is to simply add your TM to the project you have now created and pre-translate the file with everything you have done so far.  The difference between Perfect Match and a Pre-translate is that Perfect Match will keep all the match values and statuses etc. of the file you translated before... just like the update file process you now know how to use.  A pre-translate will make everything a CM or 100% match because you have got the correct translation already in your TM.  But both methods will put the content you translated before into the new file.

The pseudo-translate feature, as I mentioned in the video, is there to quickly populate the target with content that looks like the language you're translating into, contains the sort of diacritics you might use, and helps to make sure that the target file will fit the layout it's intended for, or includes everything you expect.  This is normally done before translation if you need to do DTP work at the same time as the translators translate.  I only used it in the video because it was a quick way to put something in the target that wasn't the source... now I wish I hadn't!

So you don't need to use pseudo-translate yourself.  Once you've created your project just add your TM (the one you used before) to your new project and then use the batch task to pre-translate the file(s) in your project.

Dear Paul  , today I have tried to update the file. I followed your video really step by step but the result is really a disaster! My translation disappeared! I now see mainly Italian in the position of the "source" document (which was in French!). Only from a certain poin it starts French again! I really can't understand what happened...Thanks God I had saved the target file transalted until that moment! Anyway, the target file I saved is a word file and I still had to revise the translation, so I still wanted to have it on Trados...

Why don't you create a small sample file full of content that isn't important.  Translate it.  Then try to update it.  And record what you're doing so we can see it.
