Unreliable and slow term recognition in Studio 2019

Ever since I upgraded to SDL Trados Studio 2019, the term recognition function (I also use MultiTerm 2019) has been unreliable at best:

Sometimes it takes Studio forever to search through the termbases attached to a project (quite often longer than it takes me to translate the entire segment!), sometimes terms that are definitely in an attached termbase are simply not detected - even when the termbase is stored locally on my PC.

Whereas the former is simply annoying, the latter is unforgivable, not least since the problem does not occur on every single segment, but appears to be random.

What advice can you give me?

  • Hi Jan,

Yes, it works together with Studio. That is, it's an SDL App. it uses its own termbase format (which is much more efficient than Studio's own, legacy format), but if I remember correctly you can also work directly with Studio termbases (and Excel files). However, it's best to use the programs on format. It is also very easy (and extremely fast) to import data from other termbases.

I made a quick screen cast and uploaded it here:

I keep trying to fix the built-in terminology system, I remember being very happy when they removed Java from MultiTerm, but no matter what they do to it it never really works properly. And because it is so random, whether it will work not on any given day, it is extremely frustrating to use since you never really know whether something is already in your termbase or not.

I should mention that I do generally work with extremely large TBs, and so this might have something to do with the fact that I have never had much luck with. However, if memory serves have also tested smaller TBs in the past, with no luck either.

In any case, if you have any more questions just ask and I can answer them here or make another quick video!
