Studio v2017 (CU 12) hangs on adding a new term (MultiTerm CU 6)

Question

The name of the topic says it all: when trying to add a new term from inside the Editor, the cursor turns into a circle and Trados hangs. The term is added to the termbase, however, Trados is unresponsive and needs to be restarted. 
 
 I have tried the following: 
 - Recreated the termbase from scratch 
 - Rolled back a Windows security update to Flash 
 
 Nothing seems to help. Ideas?

 You could try rolling back MultiTerm CU6 via Control Panel > Installed Updates. I did this a while back to solve a different issue. I'm not sure if a new version of this has come out but I tested the latest update and it is not producing the error any more. I vaguely recall discussion on this but can't find evidence that the latest update is OK except that it's working fine for me now. Up to you whether you try installing the latest update to MultiTerm again. 
 
 Then, at risk of sounding like a 'cracked record' (a British metaphor), have you tried a Windows Repair of MultiTerm Core and Desktop and also Studio via Control Panel?

Close all SDL applications. 
 Open the Control Panel :
 
 Windows Vista/7 : Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features . 
 Windows 8 : Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose Control Panel > Uninstall a Program . 
 Windows 10 : Right-click on Start > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features 
 - or type 'Control Panel' in the search line on your bottom Windows toolbar.

Click/highlight the relevant SDL product from the list (e.g. SDL Trados Studio 2017 SR1 ) and click ' Repair' either on the top toolbar or on the right-click dropdown menu . 
 Restart Studio/MultiTerm.

That may be all you need... If not, post again as it's bound to be relatively easy to solve this issue.

 Try using a different one to the one you are using now and see whether this still causes you a problem?

 Pavel, I don't think you need to go that far. The operating system (Windows 10, I assume) is seldom the culprit when an application, any application (SDL, Microsoft, Adobe, Google, etc.) is not working as expected. I know this for a fact having worked as the IT guy in a previous job, and with all sorts of computers, for years. I've seen in this forum people doing all that, which is basically overkill. If you have a problem with MultiTerm, deal with MultiTerm only. On the other hand, a termbase is simply a database which MultiTerm, in turn, manipulates; so, recreating a termbase may not solve anything. Of course, you can always "reorganize" (there's a function for that) a termbase within MultiTerm desktop. Everytime something does not work, always, yes, always, make sure first that the application in question is updated and you are running the latest update or cumulative update. And unless you don't perform a regular update of your computer (which, by the way, is sort of automatic in Windows) then, deal with the operating system, but that instance is rare, that is, that the operating system is causing an application to malfunction. Of course, I would not promise anything if the operating system is Windows 7 (12 years old already!) or even Windows 8 (7 years old now). At any rate, for MultiTerm questions, please, be my guest.

 If you filter by 'Answers Only' in this thread you'll find suggested answers to this issue - instructions on how to change the default layout of Term recognition and also how to uninstall MultiTerm's Cumulative Update 6. Both of these options have successfully solved the problem in hand for some users. 
 Have you tried them? 
 I actually found uninstalling CU6 worked for me, then latterly I have reinstalled it with the beta version of Studio CU13 and the problem no longer exists. This is how SDL usually come up with fixes of course, by introducing them via the next update.
