Customized segmentation rule file

Hello,

The default sentence level segmentation rules in TMS only list the following as exceptions with varying cases (ETC. and etc.), besides numbers:
etc.
i.e.
e.g.
ltd.
Inc.
plc.
...

Studio on the other hand lists what seems like 400+ items for English source. Has anyone customized sentence level segmentation rules in TMS to include those listed in abbreviation list for source English language in Studio? If so, do you mind sharing it?

Hello Naoko,
I am not sure if anyone in LPC/LDTS/PS teams has done it, but SDL TMS 2011 SP6 or newer supports Language Resource templates (e.g Default Studio style segmentation) so with any file types in SDL TMS you can use them instead of Segmentation Rules (SRX) file and the SDLXLIFF file created in TMS will be segmented exactly as if opened in SDL Trados Studio. (you can also customize Language resource in SDL Trados Studio and import it to SDL TMS if needed)

Hello Dusan,
So is this the recommended way of handling segmentation in TMS these days? We still use SRX but have noticed some issues with how it handles format tags. We used \ufffc (object replacement character) previously, but I am not so sure that works for Studio File types or at least it behaves differently than with older ITD file types.

Also, where exactly can I find the language resource templates in Studio? If I wanted to modify it, export it and upload that to TMS, how would I do that?

Hi Octavio,

You can only define Language-Resource-templates for Studio file types. ITD file types will only be using SRX segmentation, although since TMS 11.x you can't create new ITD-file types.

I never seen "\ufffc (object replacement character) in Studio SDLXLIFF format, so you don't need to have such rule. It is likely the Studio filters will handle/tag such objects differently when parsing the source content.
Moving from SRX to Studio type segmentation (Language Resource templates) will result in segmentation differences. But if you want to ensure that same prepared in Studio offline matches segmentation in TMS, then Language resource template segmentation is they way forward.
For Studio file types we recommend to use Language Resource templates especially when you had heavily customized SRX file with lots of rules otherwise it may impact performance of Pre-processing or sometimes certain rules in SRX can prevent extraction of the file altogether.
