Why does Analyze count locked segments?

I am running with Trados Studio 2019 and have encountered a strange situation in a current project.

I ran Analyze with the result that almost all segments are untranslated (New/AT segments 138). When I opened the file I saw that a large part of the file was locked and translated.
I used ADF to filter the file for "locked" segments; result 113/184.

Because I use the Analyze results for my quote, I need a reliable value. What is happening here?

  • Hello,

It seems you are encountering a situation where locked segments are being included in the analysis results, which is affecting the reliability of your word count for quoting purposes. Let me guide you through the possible reasons and solutions:

    ### Step 1: Understand the Behavior of Locked Segments in Analysis

By default, Trados Studio 2019 includes locked segments in the analysis unless you explicitly configure the settings to exclude them. This is why your Analyze Files task is counting locked segments, even though they are already translated.

    ### Step 2: Adjust the Analysis Settings

To ensure locked segments are excluded from the analysis, follow these steps:

    1. Open your project in Trados Studio 2019.

    2. Go to **Batch Tasks** and select **Analyze Files**.

    3. In the **Analyze Files** settings, look for the option to exclude locked segments. This is typically found under the **Project Settings** > **Language Pairs** > **Batch Processing** > **Analyze Files**.

    4. Check the box for **Exclude locked segments** (or a similar option).

    5. Save the settings and re-run the Analyze Files task.

    ### Step 3: Verify the Results

After re-running the analysis with the

This is just a setting in the batch task. You can select "Exclude locked segments" in the settings before running the analysis:

  • Addendum: Although the locked segments all have status CM or 100%, they are not counted as such.

  • Thanks Jerzy,
the problem, however, was not really excluding locked segments, but rather why the locked segments were counted as untranslated (they were all either CM or 100%).

This is most probably because this project was not created with your TM. The analysis only can check against the TM attached to the project. If the file was prepared somewhere else, the results may differ.

Well, if the CM and 100% are locked, you cannot have them listed as such and also excluded from the analysis. Same applies to report them as separate category. Locked is a category for itself. Otherwise the total wordcount would not be correct. If the CMs and similar would have been reported extra as locked and within their categories, their count would be doubled. Excluded means, they are not counted at all, but in this case your total wordcount would include them, even if they wouldn't be visible in the analysis results in the Projects of Files view in Studio.

I hope I am clear enough with my imperfect English. Should you wish, I could try to explain this on telephone.
