Error message when exporting a target file.

When I try to export a translated file, Trados sends me following message.

The target text could not be saved: A name must not begin with the character "<", hexadecimal value 0x3C. Line 2, position 4531.

But the name of the file doesn't begin with this character.

How can I resolve this problem?

Best Regards

  • Hello,

This error typically occurs when there is an issue with the structure of the translated file, often related to tags or formatting in the content. The message indicates that there is an invalid character ("<") in the XML structure of the file, which is causing the export to fail. Here's how you can resolve this issue:

**Step 1: Identify the Problematic Segment**

    1. Open the file in Trados Studio.

    2. Navigate to the segment mentioned in the error message (Line 2, Position 4531). While Trados Studio does not display line and position numbers directly, you can use the "Preview" feature or search for segments with tags that might contain invalid characters.

    3. Look for any misplaced or incomplete tags, or any text that starts with "<" but is not part of a valid tag.

    **Step 2: Correct the Tags**

    1. If you find any issues with tags, use the "Tag Verification" feature:

      - Go to the "Review" tab and select "Verify" or press F8.

      - Review the verification results for tag-related errors.

    2. Correct any tag mismatches or missing tags in the problematic segment.
