Cannot open translated file

Dear All,

I have translated a large file and finalized it so my TM is up to date. However, I cannot open the generated target or export file based on my translation.

I then tried to import the translatable file (after having renamed it), in order to retranslate it based on my TM, but this gives the same result.

All tips are welcome!

Question improvement suggestion: Provide specific error messages or codes encountered when trying to open the target file, as well as the version of Trados Studio you are using.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

It sounds like you're facing a challenging issue with opening your translated file. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

**Step 1:** Check for Error Messages

If you encounter any specific error messages when trying to open the target file, please note them down. This information can be crucial in diagnosing the issue.

**Step 2:** Verify File Type Compatibility

Ensure that the file type used for your project is compatible with Trados Studio. If you suspect a file type issue, you can recreate the project using the correct file type. You can find the file type identifier by switching to the Files view and generating target translations.

    **Step 3:** Recreate the Project

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, consider recreating the project:

    1. Go to the Projects view and create a New Local Project.

    2. Use the same source file as in the original project.

    3. Add the translation memory (TM) used in the original project during the Translation Resources step.

    4. Click Finish to create the project.

**Step 4:** Use Pre-Translate Batch Task

During the batch task pre-translate step, the saved segments in the TM will be used to translate the original source file. This can help in retrieving any previously translated segments.

**Step 5:** Check for Hidden Characters

Sometimes, hidden characters in the translation can cause issues. If you suspect this might be the case, try to identify and remove any hidden characters from your translation.

    **Step 6:** Update Trados Studio

If you are using an older version of Trados Studio, consider upgrading to the latest version, as this may resolve compatibility issues.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, please provide additional details, such as the specific error messages and the version of Trados Studio you are using, so I can assist you further.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

As a first step, could you tell us which file format the file was that you translated? Then it would be good to know which version of Trados Studio you used for this, and which program you used to open the transated file (although unsuccessfully).

    Thank you,

    Daniel

  • Thank you both for your swift reply! It is a simple Word document with formatting, and I am using the latest version, SDL Trados Studio 2024 (Trados Studio 2024 - 18.0.0.1013). I was indeed generating the bilingual review file, in order to try to retrieve the error message. I am a bit desperate as this is a big file and it is due today.. Thank you

Can you open the source Word file without any problems? Did you run tag verification in Trados Studio? Any segments merged over paragraph boundaries? What purpose shall the bilingual review file have? What kind of error message do you want to retrieve? Any error message from Word when trying to open the translated file there? Which Word version do you have?

  • Parallel discussions!

Docx files are XML files zipped together I believe. The character that causes the issue is a Start of Text character, which is not visible or printable and it's not allowed in XML files. (Against XML standard.) So that's the problem as far as I can see. I have to think about a good solution, unless   comes up with one first!

From my experience I've never seen a Word file including such character. However, such characters do appear sometimes in sdlxliff files and come for example from old TMs or from user names or other attributes, possibly when a TM was converted via TMX from other format. I suppose she was trying to open the translated sdlxliff file, where this error was caused.

  • Yes, the source Word file opens completely normally, without any issue. I indeed ran the tag verification and fixed/ignored the issues mentioned there.

I indeed merged some segments, possibly over paragraph boundaries. The bilingual review is not necessary, I only tried this to check what error message would come out.

The Word version we have is Microsoft office 365  - version 2510 (build 19328.20266).
