Can AT segments be overwritten in a pre-translate task?

Consider the scenario where we want to pre-translate a file where many segments are already translated and marked as AT (Automated Translation).

When setting the Translation overwrite mode to Overwrite existing translation if better match found I would have expected that AT would be overwritten if a better (ie. higher match value) is found in a TM. But that doesn't seem to be the case, at least not in my experiments.

This begs the question what the match value of a AT segment actually is? Can it be configured?

Can AT segments be overwritten in a pre-translate task? How?

  • Hello,

Yes, Automated Translation (AT) segments can be overwritten in a pre-translate task in Trados Studio. However, the behavior you're experiencing might be due to the specific settings you have chosen.

Here's how you can adjust your settings:

Step 1: Go to "All Language Pairs" in your Project Settings.

Step 2: Navigate to "Batch Processing" and then "Pre-translate Files".

Step 3: In the "Translation overwrite mode", select "Overwrite existing translation if better match found". This should allow Trados Studio to overwrite the AT segments if a better match is found in the Translation Memory (TM).

Step 4: If you do not want to overwrite the existing translations, you can select "Keep existing translation". This will preserve the AT segments.

As for the match value of an AT segment, it is not explicitly defined and cannot be configured. The AT segments are considered as a 100% match, but they are lower in the hierarchy than TM matches. Therefore, a TM match will always overwrite an AT segment if the "Overwrite existing translation if better match found" option is selected.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
