Need help transferring project location information to a new computer

I need help transferring Trados Studio 2021 project location information to a new computer.  I know how to transfer my license, and I have already done that; and, Studio 2021 is working on my new computer (and, actually, since I have a license that allows me to use Studio 2021 on 2 computers, it is still working on my old computer, as well).  In addition, I have copied over all my Studio 2021 project files to my new computer.   The problem is that when I open Studio 2021 on my new computer, none of my projects are visible in the main Projects window.  I can insert them there one by one, by copying in the locations.  But, I have dozens and dozens of projects, and don't want to search for them by hand.  On my old computer, when I open Studio 2021, it remembers where all my projects are, and links to them appear in the main Projects window.  But, not on my new computer.  The fact that Studio 2021 remembers project locations and displays them each time I open the program on my old computer, means to me that----somewhere, somehow----Studio 2021 maintains a list of where these projects are.  Where is that list?  How do I find it, so that I can copy it over to my new computer?

  • Hello,

Based on your query, it seems you have successfully transferred your Trados Studio 2021 license and project files to your new computer, but you're having trouble with the visibility of your projects in the main Projects window. Here's how you can resolve this:

Step 1: Ensure that the location where your projects are saved is accessible before starting Trados Studio. If these are saved on a network drive, for example, in case there is no connection to the drive when starting the application, the projects will not be found and will therefore be deleted from the list.

Step 2: If the location is accessible, check the file path and user name in the "Sdl.Projects Api.xml" located here:

    Trados Studio 2021: C:\Users\%User Name%\App Data\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio16

Make sure the file contains the exact location where the "projects.xml" (the system file containing information about open projects) is saved. By default it is saved under the following path: C:\Users\%User Name%\Documents\Studio 2021\Projects

NOTE: The file path may be different, depending on where Trados Studio was installed (e.g. if One Drive is in use or if you are working in a Citrix environment).

Step 3: Also check that the user name matches the Windows user name.

Step 4: Once you have confirmed the above, copy the "Sdl.Projects Api.xml" and "projects.xml" files from your old computer to the corresponding locations on your new computer.

Step 5: Restart Trados Studio 2021 on your new computer. Your projects should now be visible in the main Projects window.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

  • You suggest copying "Sdl.Projects Api.xml" and "projects.xml" files from my old to my new computer.  I have 2 questions about that.: (1) does these files exists separately for each project? and, (2) if not, if these files are unique per installation, then where are they?

  • Hello,

    To answer your questions:

    1) No, these files do not exist separately for each project. The "Sdl.Projects Api.xml" and "projects.xml" files are system files that contain information about all your projects.

    2) These files are unique per installation and are typically located in the following paths:

    - "Sdl.Projects Api.xml": C:\Users\%User Name%\App Data\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio16

    - "projects.xml": C:\Users\%User Name%\Documents\Studio 2021\Projects

Please note that the file paths may vary depending on your specific installation and system settings. For example, if you're using One Drive or working in a Citrix environment, the file paths might be different.

I hope this clarifies your doubts. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
