Change language pair in already created TMs

While any new TM created automatically has an eng-US to fr-CA language pair, I can't seem to be able to change the language pair in old TMs (eng-US to fr-CA), unless I convert them in tmx, which seems to 1990! Anything more modern?

I guess you need to know what a TM consists of and it's not just the name of the language pair.  In addition to the source and target translations (which would be so 1990's) it also contains language resources (recognizers (dates, times, variables etc.), segmentation rules, abbreviation lists etc.), field values, fragments etc.  Depending on the change you wish to make the new language pair may be different to the one you originally had.  So to effectively make this change from one language to another you do need to export to TMX, create the new SDLTM in the language pair you need, and then import the source and target values, maybe the field values too if you do it right, and then Trados Studio will built the right language resources for the language pair you now have.

Alternatively of course you could add your TM without making any changes through AnyTM which will allow you use any TM you like with your project irrespective of the language pairs.  In most cases this is probably preferable to maintaining multiple TMs for different language pairs.

  • Hi Paul,

Thanks for your reply. Your method is actually quicker than what I have done before, i.e. copy the TMX file into the Notepad and replacing each occurrence of fr-FR with fr-CA which was very time-consuming for long files. Thanks so much!
