Is there a way to find out which file a certain TM segement belongs to?

Sometimes when I'm working on a project, there might be more than 1 file.
Screenshot of Trados Studio showing a list of files with their word count, progress percentage, and untranslated words.

Sometimes there might be 30 files and while working on it I might find something that needs to be changed through searching the Concordance Search or from TM suggestions.

Screenshot of Trados Studio's translation results window with a TM segment selected, displaying details such as origin, modification, and usage information.

When hovering over the name of the person who created the TM, it will show information such as Origin, last modified on, last modified by, last used on, last used by, usage count, created on, and created by.  However it will not show which file contains that TM segment.

One of my fellow translators who also uses another CAT tool told me that one provides which file that TM was used in.

I've been preaching to him about Trados is always better but I didn't have an answer I could give him. I was hoping there was actually an way to figure this out to stick it in his face.

I'll be really happy if someone could help me out.

Thanks!

  • Hello,

I understand your need to identify the specific file a Translation Memory (TM) segment belongs to when working on multiple files in a project. However, Trados Studio does not currently provide a feature to track the specific file a TM segment comes from. The information available includes the origin, last modified on/by, last used on/by, usage count, created on/by, but not the specific file.

This is because when you confirm a segment, the translation unit is stored in the TM, but the TM does not keep a record of which specific file the segment came from. The TM is designed to be a database of translations that can be used across multiple projects and files, so it doesn't link translation units to specific files.

I understand that this might be a feature you'd find useful, and I encourage you to share this feedback with the Trados Studio team. They're always looking for ways to improve the product and may consider adding this feature in future updates.

In the meantime, you might consider creating separate TMs for each file or project if you need to keep track of where specific translations are coming from. This could be a workaround until a more streamlined solution is available.

I hope this information is helpful, and I appreciate your understanding.
