Issue with Project TM showing no translation units

Hello,

When importing an updated Studio 2022 project TM at the end of a project, I've got : Read : 84  Imported : 0.

Steps :I finalise the file with Batch task. I reopen it and then I update the project TM. I import the translated file in the TM and get Read : 84 Imported : 0

How do I fix this? I do this because it doesn't fill automatically with translation units while translating.

When I create a new project, I create a project TM when on all the languages pairs, I tick all the boxes included the update box for the TM. But it doesn't fill the TM when translating and confirming the segments.

What am I doing wrong? I'm a newby on Studio.

Thanks  for your help

Trados Studio import summary showing 84 units read and 0 units imported with a green checkmark indicating completion.

Trados Studio project settings with a translation memory 'FtFenfr-M01-EntrepriseRealite.sdlTM' listed under 'Memoire de traduction' with update options checked.

I think there may be some confusion here.

Steps :I finalise the file with Batch task.

When you do this the Finalise Batch Task will update your Main TM amongst other things.  So it will already be done and the Project TM isn't needed anymore unless you want to send it to your client... or something like that.

I reopen it and then I update the project TM.

    Not required.

I import the translated file in the TM and get Read : 84 Imported : 0

Why?  Did you export to a TMX first and then import it?  I'm confused by this.

I do this because it doesn't fill automatically with translation units while translating.

ok - so let's consider the last screenshot you showed of your Translation Memories.

First of all none of these are Project TMs.  Just because they are in your Project does not make them a Project TM.  A Project TM has a special meaning in Trados Studio as it's a TM that gets created when you create a Studio Project with the appropriate tasks and it's filled with Translation Units that are found in your Main TM for that Project based on your TM search settings.  This is normally done for a couple of reasons:

    1. so you can send a small set from our Main TM as part of a Project Package that only contains relevant TM matches to help the translator
    2. so you have a "scratch pad" TM that won't pollute the Main Translation Memory until you have reviewed all the translations
    3. maybe some other reasons too... but I reckon these are the main ones

You can tell the difference when you look at them in the screenshot you showed because a Project TM is shown as a branch below the Main TM.  You are only showing Main TMs.

Secondly, only one of your TMs is checked to update.  Which one are you updating and checking?

Thirdly, lets go back to your import.  It shows 84 read but 0 invalid and 0 imported.  This could be because they are already in your TM.  How are you checking this?  How do you now they have not been saved?

So how do I create a project TM

When you create your project use this task called "Prepare":

Screenshot of Trados Studio software showing the 'Create a New Project - Batch Tasks' window. A list of 'Task Sequences' is visible with one highlighted: 'Prepare without project TM'. This indicates a task sequence selection that will prepare the project without creating a project translation memory (TM). There are several tabs along the top, including 'General', 'Translation Resources', and 'Termbases', with 'Batch Tasks' currently selected. The interface has a green and white colour scheme, and there are checkmarks along the top indicating progress through the project creation steps, with 7 of 9 steps completed. A note at the bottom explains that the 'Prepare' task removes any fragment searching and limits the number of maximum hits found in the TM to optimize the performance of the Analyze Files and Pre-translate batch tasks.

This task will create a ProjectTM from the translation memory you select when you add your "Translation Resources similar to this:

Here's the project settings showing a Project TM below the main TM that was selected when the project was created.

Note the "Project 14_en-fr.sdltm".  This is the Project TM that is created and added to your project folders.  It takes the name of your project and uses it as a suffix to the Main TM which in this case is en-fr.sdltm.

Note that when you translate, and you confirm your segments, all the translation units will be added to this project TM and not to the Main TM.  The Main TM will only be updated when you run the Finalize batch task, or an update Main TM batch task.

So how do I create a project TM to be able to send it to a client if asked

In this case you could send the project TM, but not this will also contain any fuzzy matches you had from your Main TM.  So to avoid that make sure that your project settings were only looking for 100% matches before you created the Project TM... or... and this may be a better approach, just create a new TM specifically for this purpose and import your SDLXLIFF file.  If they want a TMX you could then convert the SDLTM to a TMX or even use an app to convert the SDLXLIFF to TMX.

But when I go to the Translation memories editor screen, I have no units shown.

    If this is true:

"The first segments with the 500 words coming from doc 1 are translated as 100% Perfect match (so the main TM is ok)"

It sounds as though you are getting Perfect Match results from the previous translation (the SDLXLIFF).  This is another feature only available in the Professional version so either have a licence for that or you are still using the trial.

But on your TM I suggest you check two things:

    1. that the paths are the same.  So you are checking the same one that you think you are updating.
    2. that you did in fact update while translating by confirming each segment so it gets saved into your translation memory
When does this editor fill with translation segments?

When you translate and confirm a segment it will save to the Translation Memory.

What is the utility of this editor?

It's entirely for maintenance.  It's not needed while translating.

Is there a  PDF document explaining how to deal with the TM (main and project TM)?

I suggest you use the help!  But you'll also find some PDF guides in Trados Studio in the Welcome View under the Get Started tab.  This one for example touches on this concept of Project TM on page 27:

    file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Trados/Trados%20Studio/Studio17/Documentation/en/Project_Management_QSG_en.pdf

  • Ok, thank you very much !

I will check all this and have another try for the next project.

Answer: I've got a freelance licence. I'm not under trial version.

    Have a nice day.
