Trados 2022. Fuzzy matches

Hello!

I am new at Trados. I've never used any CAT tool in the past. I recently purchased Trados Studio 2022 and I'm going through the level one training program. Unfortunately I already found and obstacle that I can't sort.  I am at the very beginning, learning how to translate a word document and the Translation Results window doesn't show any matches. On top of that, on the editor, it only shows the 100% matches but no fuzzy matches. I've been searching in the internet and I haven't found the solution.  Please understand that I'm brand new and the whole interface is a new world to me. As I mentioned at the beginning, I am just starting the training program so I need a very detailed explanation. I haven't modified anything. I'm using the program as it came. I desperately need help with this. Thank you!

Presumably if you're new and are following a training program then you should be able to tell us what you have done, step by step so far?  Then we can tell you what you're missing.  I don't think trying to explain everything you need to know here will be helpful since you clearly missed something after following these steps in the first place.

A decade ago I wrote a short article  that might be helpful in the meantime:

Perhaps you can take a look and see if it helps?  The interface will look a little different but at least the principle are basically the same.

  • Hi Paul!

I sincerely appreciate your time and expertise. As you said, I've been following the training program step by step without changing any of the default settings. The very first thing I did following the instructions was to open a Word sample document provided by Trados which I had previously downloaded to my computer. To do so, I went to the "welcome" window, clicked on the "browse" link, selected the document, and then clicked "open". The "translate" window opened showing the file I had selected, where I clicked on the "translate as single document" button. Right after the "translation memory and document settings" window opened. I selected both the source and target languages, then clicked on the "create a translation memory" button, named the database, and then clicked on the "finish" button, and once the translation memory was created I clicked on the finish button. After that, the window confirming the creation of the translation memory opened, and I clicked "ok" to open the file on the editor. The editor opened showing the document with a single sentence on each segment. The first seven sentences are very similar. I started t the first one and clicked the "confirm" button. I moved to the second segment and translated it. In theory, it should have shown a fuzzy match on the third segment since they are about 95% similar, but the "translation results window" shows no matches found.  I continued translating waiting for more fuzzy matches to show up since the first seven segments are very similar but it didn't happen.  All I did was follow the instructions on the training program but at this point, the training program and my practice stopped coinciding.

I have to say that this is extremely frustrating. I purchased both, Trados Studio 2022 and the training program and I find it unfair to have to pay for technical support. Any advice on the right direction will be highly appreciated.

    Thank you!

  • Hi, Juan!

Go to the Project Configuration and there to the Language combinations - All Language combination - Translation Memory- Search.

    The following window will open:

Trados Studio Project Configuration window showing Language combinations section with Translation Memory and Search options. Minimum match value set to 70%.

If you have the minimum value of coincidence set to 100, lower it to 70%.

Hope, it will help! Best regards!

  • Hi Julia,

Thank you very much for your time. It wasn't until today that I could go back to Trados since I'm slowly switching jobs and translation will be the main one.

I followed your instructions and unfortunately, the minimum value coincidence was set to 70%. I'm lost. I haven't been able to use the toll. I find it outrageous having to pay for technical support since I haven't modified the original settings, and purchasing the program was not cheap. If you have any other suggestions, I'd be more than grateful!

    Regards

    Juan

  • Hola, Juan!

Trados translation memories are a blank sheet. If you have a veery small memory, then the probability of the program returning you any results, both 100% or fuzzy matches, is extremely low.

Are you sure you update your TMs when you translate? How big are your TMs?

    Best regards.
