"This feature is not available for project packages in the Studio edition you are using." - Studio 2022 Freelance

Hello.

I recently upgraded to Studio 2022 Freelance and now am unable to use additional translation memories with project packages received. The client tends to send project packages with TMs embedded and is generally also asking that I add an additional "project TM", which I used to be able to do, but since my product upgrade the option is greyed out and the above error message displayed. The project manager does not know how to help.

Does anyone know which version of Studio I'd need to be using in order to have the above functionality back?

  • Hello,

I understand your concern about the limitations you're experiencing with Trados Studio 2022 Freelance. The issue you're facing is due to the restrictions of the Freelance edition, which only allows you to use the translation memories (TMs) that are included in the project package you received.

To regain the functionality of adding additional TMs to your project packages, you would need to upgrade to Trados Studio 2022 Professional. The Professional edition does not have the same restrictions and allows you to add as many TMs as you need to your projects.

    Here's how you can upgrade:

Step 1: Visit the RWS website.

Step 2: Navigate to the Trados Studio section.

Step 3: Select the Professional edition.

Step 4: Follow the prompts to purchase and install the upgrade.

Remember to always check for updates within the application to ensure you're using the latest version of the software.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

    Best regards,

Should this really be the case for all kind of packages received (and not only via Group Share), I'd be shocked by this limitation.

You can circumvent this however, creating your own project using the sdlxliff files from the target folder of your received package. In this project you should be able to add any TM you wish, including the TM from your customer. When the files are translated, simply take the sdlxliff files from your project, copy them and overwrite the files in the customer package, run the batch "Translation count" and create return package as usual.

This is definitely an example of an hallucinating AI response, probably triggered by using the same versions you mention in the post and putting it together with a restriction it knows about for other versions!

There are no such restrictions with the Freelance edition!

I checked your account and can see that you upgraded from Starter, which does have these restrictions, so I reckon your problem is more likely to be due to you still using Starter even though you think you're using Freelance.

I suggest you do the following.

    1. deactivate Trados Studio through the help menu and make sure you are not running with an active licence
    2. once the licence is deactivated delete the lic file here:
      c:\ProgramData\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio17\Data\Studio.lic
    3. restart Studio and activate with the activation code for Freelance and not the Starter edition

Let me know if this doesn't help and we'll engage a support engineer who is expert in sorting these problems out.

  • Thank you, Paul and Jerzy.

The issue has been resolved - the activation code was indeed not the one pertaining to the Freelance edition. Entering the correct activation code (which I was sure I'd done previously) has solved the problem.
