I found a way to highlight words or segments (Tab Edition < QuickInsert < little arrow on the right < Appliquer la couleur de surbrillance (I'm working in the French edition).
I'd like to add this option to the shortcuts on the QuickInsert Tab, next to €, "" ... Thank you !

Has anything been effectively done in this regard over the last 4 years? Studio offers shortcuts for inserting stuff nobody ever uses, such as TM mark, but doesn't offer a shortcut for the obviously important feature that is highlighting. Nonsense, no?
Unfortunately no, nothing has ever been done about this. It would be worth adding your vote and more to this item:
In the meantime I'd recommend the Wordbird plugin as the commenting features are more sophisticated than the one in Studio even if you do work through the menus to get to them:
