I am using Studio 2019 (latest version) and have now encountered the problem for the first time. I have been a user of Trados for several years and have used a number of earlier versions (since Trados 2009). I am unable to close Studio using the usual methods. The project I was working on is now completed and marked as such in Trados but this has not solved the problem.
Hello Michael Davies <
Have you been able to resolve this issue?
Maybe closing Studio via the Task manager?
Then restart your computer and see if the problem is resolved.

Thanks, Steven. I did finally manage to close Studio so hope that the issue does not repeat itself.
The error messages in Studio are often rather cryptic - I am an IT-user (also at super-user level) with many years experience of many different products in various fields and SDL must hold (my) record of messages that don't mean much and are quite unhelpful. I sometimes suspect that this is part of a strategy to get more users to purchase maintenance contracts! In view of the cost of Studio, I would have expected better.
Hello Michael Davies,
Glad you have been able to resolve this in the meantime.
The vast majority of error messages are actually Windows based and are not unique to Studio and it certainly isn't in our interests to over complicate matters.
I can absolutely 100% assure you that this is not part....
of a strategy to get more users to purchase maintenance contracts
...as we wouldn't otherwise offer a completely free SDL community, where anyone is free to offer advice and/or ask any technical or otherwise questions they have regarding our products.
Of course, I would still advise users to purchase a contract because i believe it's a sensible approach to business- especially as a freelance translator.
A single yearly fee- provides both unlimited support AND Free upgrades-so you know exactly what costs you have in the coming year and can budget accordingly.

Actually, it is only very rarely (maybe 1-2 times during a year) that I cannot find a solution to the issues that I face with Studio - partly because I am IT-savvy and able to find solutions to those issues that do arise and partly thanks to Google that makes it possible to find useful hints to what the source of the problem could be.
