I've just bought the new update for 2019 - but I'm nervous to download it and use it as I've read a lot of comments on forums alluding to weird things happening after updating or during updating. Is the process of updating generally a simple one, free of difficulties?
Also what will happen to current files I'm working on and my existing TM and termbases etc? I'm scared they will disappear.
Studio 2019 runs alongside 2017 so it's not really an update, it's a new installation. t doesn't use the same program files, it doesn't use the same projects etc. The sensible thing to do is DO NOT RETURN your 2017 licence from the product. So leave 2017 activated and then you can continue to use it until you have more confidence in 2019.
You should complete your existing projects in 2017 and only start new ones in 2019. There is no real technical reason for this as you could open the existing projects into 2019 and work on them there, but I think it helps with confidence to work this way since any problems whatsoever will be attribited to the "upgrade" even if it's not really the case.

Now, Year 2020 is around corner.
Then, Version 2019 should be history just like its predecessors.
How's your next generation product goning on ?
Version 2021 maybe ?
Whatever we do it will be possible to install alongside previous versions.

Normally you would return your licence if you wanted to activate it again on another computer, or if you had to rebuild your exsting computer. If you didn't return it first it would no longer be available to you and it would require a reset.
If you "upgrade" from 2017 to 2019 you are in effect replacing your 2017 licence with a 2019 one. So if you returned your licence for 2017 that would be it... it would never be available to you again. You only have the 2019 licence in your account.
If you don't return it then you can use 2017 for as long as you have it running on your computer. You won't be able to put it on another cmputer, and if you have to rebuild the one you use today it will be lost for good.
