After closing and reopening Trados, rebooting the computer, installing an update and switching the filter for projects entirely to "Show all projects", the projects have re-appeared, even as I switched the filter back to "In progress" files (what I had when the list disappeared). All is good for now!

Since the project list is back, the only thing that could cause this is the filter settings. I suspect that the filter was set in a way that none of the projects matched the filter criteria as consequence none of the projects appeared in the project list. Furthermore when you tried to re-open the project you got the notification that the project is already in the list, this is another clue that consolidate above scenario.

I assume this was the case. What was strange, though, was that the projects suddenly appeared when I changed all the filter settings to "Show all projects" and remained visible even after I switched back to the previous filter setting (Status: In progress).  Either way, I'm thrilled that my projects are back.
