Cannot save target to IDML

Hello,

I can't save the target as IDML. The problem cames instantly creating the project and it's present only in Trados (tested MemoQ, Wordfast Anywhere, Matecat and OmegaT).

Here's the error:

    Hello ,

that's not so simple. I've got the NDA and cannot share the non-public files ad hoc.

If I get from SDL a declaration of confidentiality I will ask the Client if I can send the file to you.

You've said: "the IDML file may have been created in an unsupported version of Adobe InDesign", so once again, I kindly ask you to specify which versions of Adobe InDesign are currently not supported by Trados Studio 2019 and I expect to receive the factual answer soon.

    Thanks in advance,

    Rafał

  • Hello @

Ok- I understand the issues surrounding NDA's and that you cannot share the file.

As i'm sure you will appreciate, without seeing the file and being able to test, makes it nigh on impossible to locate the origin of the problem.

Studio supports the following- (as is stated in the supported file types link you provided).

Screenshot of Trados Studio supported file types list, including file formats such as DOCX, HTML, and Adobe FrameMaker.

Im hoping other users will see this thread and be able to offer some advice.

  • Hi

AFAIK InDesign CC 2019 (idml) is officially supported.

One possibility is to open the idml in InDesign, save as indd, then export again as idml. If you have the option, open it with CC 2018 and export the idml from there.

These would be my first attempts.

Since you speak of creating the project, I assume this is not a Studio package you received.

    Hello

Thanks but I think it won't be enough. If a user buys a licence for software that should work with another (especially that other CAT tools are able to process the file w/o any problems) then it should work, it just must work. Otherwise, we have a ground for complaint. The software doesn't do what it was bought to do.

We all work in a very confidential environment - I remember the top-secret documents handled inside SDL when I worked there in-house. The diagnosis based on the file from the user is a bad (and desperate) direction. Maybe SDL should develop more detailed error logs which makes the full diagnosis possible without sharing the production files to the 3rd party? I can imagine that most of the files users had sent to SDL for diagnosis violated their own Client's NDA's terms and they even don't know it or don't bother. But some users are aware of the consequences and simply cannot send the files.

Sorry for the straight and forward approach but I'm not satisfied with the software anymore. I know that you're not responsible for how things go, so don't take this personally but there's much to do to return on the right tracks. Maybe the developers should be reminded about the KISS rule Slight smile

Anyway, have a nice weekend ;)

    Rafał

    Hi Daniel,

thanks, that was what I've tested at the beginning. I've even created projects in different CATs and without translating the files, exported the target IDML (tested IDMLs from Matecat, OmegaT and Wordfast Anywhere) and these IDMLs were imported to Trados Studio and couldn't be exported from Studio anymore. Disappointed

And yes, there was no package.

    Regards,

    Rafal

  • Hi

Sorry to hear that. I work with InDesign files about on a daily basis and have not come across this phenomenon. So whatever it is that Studio does not cope with survives all the conversions you mention. As for analysis, depending on the non-text content you could use MemoQ to pseudo-translate to make the file sharable with SDL.

Did you try exporting all Stories (InDesign->Edit->InCopy->Export->All Stories) to icml and work with the icml files? You would have to check "use unsupported versions" because the icml filter does not support cc 2018 yet (it works with CC2018 and CC2019 though).

That would be my next try.

    Hi Daniel,

thanks, I haven't tried the InCopy workflow yet. I'll check it for sure.

This time, the file wasn't big - I was able to copy&paste the translation from SDLXLIFF to INDD manually but such issue may be problematic when we have a big file and no time for such improvisation. I will try to anonymize the file and remove all content to send it for analysis anyway but I need more time for that.

    Regards,

    Rafal
