Help - Multiple TM segments saved instead of replacing old ones

Hello,

I'm facing an issue since a few months, even though I checked all the settings I was aware of to set the right parameters...

Multiple segments are saved in the TM instead of replacing the one I just corrected. Here is an example of what happens:

Screenshot showing three Translation Memory (TM) segments in Trados Studio with slight variations of the same sentence in different stages of editing.

I first realized I forgot to translate a word, so I do it. Then I thought I could add the accent on the capital. So I get three TM segments for one single sentence. It could be when I correct a term, when I add a symbol to note I have a doubt to check later... There are many reasons to modify a segment, but it doesn't mean I want to keep all wrong versions!

This has many consequences, the most annoying and unsolvable one being that I get many 99% and that I never know which version Studio picked, so I need to check all of the 99% and delete manually (!) every single wrong segment so that it doesn't propagate elsewhere... But my options are good:

Screenshot of Trados Studio's Translation Memory options with settings for updating TMs, including options for 'All language pairs' and segment status such as 'Draft' and 'Translation to be validated'.

Here it is for all language pairs, but it's the same parameter for specific language, and also the same parameter in the project parameters as in the general software options. I also tried to change for "Replace" instead of "Merge", which could have worked as well, but it's still creating multiple TM segments...

Can you please help me ??

  • Hello ,

From the example you have provided-

Trados Studio interface showing three different translation segments highlighted, indicating near-identical translations treated as separate valid segments.

    - you have saved three different versions (source) translations for the original source text- As these are near identical (accent/s/en endings) these are treated as three different valid translation segments and will appear therefore as the 99% matches.

If you change the settings to Overwrite existing translation units

Trados Studio project settings window with 'Translation Memory and Automated Translation' tab open, showing options for handling translation updates.

...these will be overwritten if you go back and change the translation.

The (duplicate) segments already in the TM can be removed in the TM maintenance view

Trados Studio main interface with a translation memory maintenance view open, showing a list of duplicate segments that can be removed.

    Does this help you?

  • Hello Steven,

Thank you very much for your reply!

I understand of course that changing the option doesn't make the "duplicate" segments disappear from the TM.

Unfortunately, your advice doesn't solve my problem: as I said, with both "Merge" and "Overwrite", when I translate a new segment (after checking one of the two options) and then correct it (to be sure it merged/replaced it), it still creates a new segment in the TM, so both right+wrong versions are saved.

As Nora just asked, it's only with AnyTM. Would it mean this function can't work with AnyTM?

    Thanks for your help
