I think it would be good if you could post the exact and full error message and explain which word versions the files were created in.

To test if you can save the files- start a new single file translation- open the file in the editor and then immediately SAVE AS.

If you have a problem here- then this should mean there is an issue with the original source file itself which then needs to be looked at.

Thank you for your answer.

The error message is fatal error "the document cannot be processed since it contains unexpected content" commencing on the fourth stage of file preparation in the wizard (after scan conversion and copy to target language) on all subsequent stages. The files were both Word 2016 files from different sources, which I "saved as" locally just to be sure. As I further mentioned, I was able to work around this by unchecking WordprocessingML v. 2, and using the other word filter, but this is surely not the proper functionality of the software.

Furthermore, following your advice, I was able to open the file using the single file mode.
