Can I undo a segment merge?

I would have thought that clicking Undo would be enough, but it doesn't seem to work!

In a translation in Studio 2019, I merged 3 segments (having first enabled this in Project Settings), but then I realized this would mess up the formatting too much. So I would like to undo the merge - but the segments seem to have disappeared. The numbers in the left-hand column jump straight from 44 to 48, and the text of the source segments is nowhere to be found.

When I click undo (ctrl+Z), all my other actions can be undone, but the segment merge doesn't appear in the list of actions.

Any insights?

Thanks very much in advance!

  • Hi Frances,

The undo worked, but Studio hides the segments. (At least that is what I remember.)

If I recall correctly, the segments will show up if you close and reopen the file.

You can also see the segments if you go to File->Options->Editor->Automation and uncheck "Hide empty segments that have been merged".

Once the segments have been displayed, you can go back to this setting and check "Hide empty segments that have been merged" again. The segments won't disappear again.

It has been a while since I figured this out, but since it is such a pain to close/reopen the file or uncheck/check the setting above, I generally do what Paul suggests now, i.e. manually split the segment. That way the resulting segments don't disappear from view. (I don't care about the change in segment numbers.)

I didn't report this in the past because I doubt SDL will bother fixing it. It is just another one of those annoying things you have to be aware of when using Studio.

  • Hi Bruce, thanks a lot for your help. I came across the same thing by accident - having closed SDL and reopened it, I noticed the segments were back. But I wasn't aware of the "Hide empty segments" option, so that's really useful to know. And now I know it's a thing, I will think more carefully about whether I really want to merge segments before doing so - experimenting isn't a good idea without an "undo" option!
