I generally use "translate single file". I'd like to combine all the translations I've done for one client into a project, to which I can add all future files as they come in. That way the "update project translation memories", which is much faster, will work for these.
In general, some guidance on when to combine translations, how to easily combine/separate them, etc.,would be really useful.

From your post I understand that you want to have all your translations in one TM. Please confirm that all your documents translated have the same language pair and if you used the same TM for all your translations .In this case , all the segments are already in the TM created.
If every document has a different TM , you just need to merge the TM s- please note that this will work only if you have the same language pair.

If you did not create any TM , you need to make an alignment for each document and import all the results in the same TM .

Please note that you need only to manage your TM in order to increase your translation productivity.
