I'm doing some technical translation at the moment, very heavy on technical terms. Luckily I have an extensive glossary that was supplied as 100 percent matches in a pre-existing translation memory. So basically a long list of matched pairs like:
angle of bend --- Abkantungswinkel
conveying drive --- abfördernder Antrieb
float position --- Schwimmstellung
and so on.
Now, the text I am translating is of course segmented, and many of the segments consist of a short introductory note, followed by a list of technologies. They look like this, for example:
"For use on rocky ground: High speed steel riveted, Masonry RPC self-centering, MMP Titanium Nitrite plug, Cobalt HSS Multialloy, Carbosteel Cutting TL..." (these lists are sometimes up to sixty entries long)
So you have to imagine that each of these technologies already has an entry in the TM I got with a 100% match in German. "High speed steel riveted" would be one entry, "Masonry RPC self-centering" another, and so on.
So when one of these segments appears (and there are many), I first have to click on "Concordance Search", then I have to copy the first of the listed terms into the search window, then I have to select "Search in original text" (as opposed to the translated text) of the TM to get my 100% match with the original, then I have to copy the match into my string, and then I have to repeat the whole procedure with EVERY_SINGLE_TECHNOLOGY on the list. It's cumbersome. There have to be ways to speed this up? If these terms would be all over the document I could search & replace them, but each individual term rarely appears more than once or twice, and the TM is very extensive, so that's not an option.
