Licensing and MAC Address

Question

I was unable to access the internet through my normal wired connection and had to use the WiFi mobile hotspot on my smartphone. When I tried to open Trados, I got the product activation dialogue. 
 My question is, why is the license not tied to the local machine, but apparently to the MAC address of the device that connects to the internet, i.e. cable my vs. mobile hotspot.

The problem here is the difference between Wired and Wireless connections in itself. 
Your computer uses different addresses depending on how you are connected (AFAIK- it is simply not possible to have multiple connection possibilities using the same MAC IP routes. 
 
To workaround this (when you know you are switching from Wired to Wireless and vice versa) simply close down Studio and then reopen in the new network.
