hello, I have read Steven Whales reply to Anna saying that all projects from 2015 can be opened in 2019 but I am still unsure whether it makes sense for me to upgrade from 2015 direct to 2019 or "VIA" 2019. Any pros and cons?

Do you mean 'via 2017'? If so, there is no reason why you can't simply upgrade from 2015 to 2019 which would be the cheapest way.
You do this via your SDL Account > Licenses > Buy New Version Upgrades > Upgrade.
That is cheaper than buying 2019 outright.
Then, when you install 2019 you can do it without removing 2015 and then 2015 should still work until you uninstall it.
