All of a sudden I started getting queries from clients about typos, which was rather unexpected. Now I notice that even though Studio has been happily working with Hunspell for gd-GB, it now says "Language not supported" i.e. it has stopped spellchecking without even bothering to flash me a notice. It's not a locale issue, the target is showing up correctly as gd-GB and the Hunspell files are still in the right folder. Any ideas?
Ok I found it but I'd suggest this is a bug or at least it could be done in a more user friendly way. It seems that some update over-wrote spellcheckmanager_config.xml (where "unsupported" languages have to be added manually for spellchecking to work). Once I re-added it, spellchecking "worked" again.
This isn't user friendly. In fact, the whole approach to adding a new language to Hunspell is a bit of a nightmare, you have to manually past the .dic and .aff for the language, then copy the spellcheckmanager_config.xml into a different folder (at least under Windows 10 because even as an admin, it won't let you edit it in situ) and then back again. That's assuming the translator is happy editing an xml file (I would take that as a given...)
I actually put this up as a suggestion (community.sdl.com/.../add-more-hunspell-spellcheckers-to-trados) but I can't see that this has gotten anywhere. It certainly doesn't seem more "helpful".
