The only reason I can think of that the alignment is greyed out, would be id you are using a Starter version (which has no alignment function).

In Freelance/Pro versions- you should be seeing something like this

Maybe you can post a screen shot of what you are seeing.

Thank you for taking the time to explain to me! I have indeed found that I am using "SDL Trados Studio 2019 Freelance". It does have the alignment option as you have shown in image #1. However, the option of "Alignment Edit Mode" is greyed out.

As you can see in the second picture, it is not even available in the Alignment options, along with "Connect n:n" option.

I followed the tutorial steps provided in the Education file I purchased with SDL exams. 

1 - Align a single pair

2 - create new TM + choose options

3 - add my source and target files (from an old project). They are excel files. 

4 - align. They are aligned perfectly as shown in the education file, and a video on SDL youtube. 

Yet, the option seems to be not available for some reason? but for the time being, I working without :/

how can I edit individual segments without the alignment edit mode option?

To edit the segments just click in them.

To change the alignment of individual segments just click the number of the segments in the middle.  For example, here I clicked on the 11 on te left, then the 11 on the right and they are now selected so I can do whatever I like with them:

This is much easier than before, I don't even have to hold the ctrl key, I just click.

IIRC, you didn't need the Ctrl key before either... for 1:1 connections you could simply click one number and drag it over the the other number... and that was it.

I was referring to not needing to hold Ctrl to make multiple selections which you often need to do in windows applications when making multiple selections, not comparing to the previous method. The old way used checkboxes so of course you didn’t need it!

you can use the drag method here too, but this is about making menu options available, not the drag technique.

I never used the checkboxes way since turning the checkboxes on made the application TERRIBLY slow and sluggish. Better use the Ctrl-click for multiple selections and then drag. That's WAY faster.
