Am I the only one that finds the training ridiculous?

So I downloaded the SDL Trados Studio, installed it for the languages I use.

Then I get the training packages (some PDFs and sample files) and it is all intended to be used with German.

So I reinstall the software all over again with German.

Then I'm going through the PDF and most of the time it doesn't tell me what to write in German! It just says translate the remaining segments.

Really disappointed in this training package and hope there is someway to raise this issue to SDL.

  • Hi

Ah, hang on a sec, I get your point. The TMs and auto dictionaries are there to be used so you'd need the correct translation texts to demonstrate them in work.

The answer to that, then, would be to have the correct translations already saved to the TMs so that they can be added as 100% matches using the 'Apply Translation' function on the top toolbar or Ctrl+T.

Trados Studio screenshot showing the top toolbar with 'Apply Translation' function highlighted in yellow.

I haven't ever used the sample files, I don't know if the translations are already in the TMs provided or not. I guess not, or you'd have noticed them [;)]

    All the best,

  • Making everything have a 100% match would eliminate all the training exercises regarding fuzzy matches, terminology match, partial segment matches, fine alignment.
They just need to provide the translation you should input in the pdf so the process is as close to real life as possible.

I’m not expecting them to make separate training packages for every language pair but just to make their current package more accessible to non-German speakers.
  • Hi again

Add that to the ideas page as I recommended in my first post ;-)

    All the best,

  • If there would be the text you wish in the PDF, what difference would it make to the video tutorials you can find for training?
IMO the best way to learn using such program as Studio is to start your own project with your languages. Even if you start with a completely empty TM and TB, you can start adding terms to TB and profit from there and from UpLift very quickly. This is much better, than a stupid retyping of any text one does not understand. At least I cannot really imagine learning anything about using a tool, when my task would be retyping a French text. The retyping task would absorb all my concentration, as I do no understand a word in that language... This is contra productive for learning in my eyes.

  • Hi

Fair comment. Though, a total beginner would not already have the knowledge to create a TM and TB so the whole training package would have to be redesigned to include instructions on that before anything else. Though I've not used it, I think that currently it's based on examples that include ready-made 'building bricks' of TM, TB, autosuggest dictionary, etc., so users can get straight into translation with as little knowledge as possible.

I personally would prefer a tutorial that is first based on creation of all the elements required for a translation (autosuggest dictionary excepted as the TM has to have a certain number of entries before that is possible) but that would be too much information all at once for some new users who just want to get on and translate.

Fair point also that focusing on typing in another language takes one's concentration away from the task of learning how the process works...

There must be a logical solution...
