Help with "translation memory too large for demo mode. install a valid license file or connect a dongle to the parallel port" 2007 on Win10

Hello, 
 I have installed Trados 2007 (freelance) and SDLX on a win10 device. The installation went fine without a hiccup. I made sure to install with "run as admin..". 
 After installing I've verified the product with a valid license (online) and I got an "all ok" popup. If I go into the SDL License manager and click "View Activated Licenses" I see 3 licenses: LOCAL_TRIAL_FID_14 and LOCAL_TRIAL_FID_18 and my license (State: OK, permanent). 
 However, in the License Manager's "license status" / Available licenses panel, I see nothing. 
 The issue is that when I try to open a translation memory, it asks me for the license again, I enter it and all ok, but when program brings me to the "SDL Trados Translator's Workbench" everything is empty and I read below a read message saying: translation memory too large for demo mode. install a valid license file or connect a dongle to the parallel port. 
 What's going on? How can I troubleshoot or fix?

You have a couple of problems here: 
 
1. Not many people in SDL Support will even know what you are talking about as this product is so old 
2. It's not supported at all anyway 
 
Perhaps make sure your licence is really available and thath you have the right licence for the version of Workbench you are trying to install (I don't recall what all the statuses mean any more). You can reset your own license, if needed, by using the Self Service option in your MySDL account for SDL Trados 2007. 
 
Use this KB article ( gateway.sdl.com/.../communityknowledge ) and follow the instructions.

Hi Giovanni Ereste 
 I have installed 2007 again and entered my license code. My first screenshot is the same as yours, with the two trial licenses at the top and my full license code beneath. My second screenshot has 'Official license file for order ######' and everything it covers listed below, it is not blank like yours. 
 It looks as if an association between the various components of 2007 is broken, or failing to connect to your online account info. 
 If you go to your online account info here and click on Licenses, how does your license entry look: 
 
 Is it listed with (Activation code) after the product name and does it show 'In Use 1'? 
 If this happened to me, the first thing I would try would be a Windows Repair of whichever components of the 2007 product you have installed (SDLX, SDL Trados Synergy 2007, then finally SDL Trados 2007). SDL Trados 2007 covers both TagEditor and Workbench. 
 Let me know if that solves your problem.

 I should also have given you instructions on running a Windows Repair via Control Panel... 
 Close all SDL applications. 
 Open the Control Panel via Windows button>Windows System>Control Panel: 
 Windows 10: Right-click on Start (Windows button) >Windows System > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features. 
 Click/highlight the relevant product in the list and click Repair on the top toolbar (or in right-click context menu).

Further to the help offered by Alison and Paul, I have tried to locate your account but have been unable to do so. 
If you could provide the order number/account email address of the original purchase (swhale@sdl.com) then we can probably update the account details and connect the accounts as you will need to access the original account and not the one you have set up a couple of days ago.

 Thank you for the error stack-. 
 This is actually most helpful as this would indicate the error is being caused because of the inability to connect to your clients Synergy Server and the software that you are using- either the free 'elite' version or the 2007 licenses you were given are simply not available anymore. 
 If your client is still using Synergy, (uses an obsolete license mechanism that we (SDL) have access to), then they are also the only ones that will able to help you in this instance and generate a new license.

As mentioned in my previous reply- the licensing technology used when licensing Synergy/older Trados products is now obsolete and to which we no longer have access to. 
As with I would think is the case with the vast majority of 'licensed software'- checks are made each time you start a software to check the integrity and validity of the license. This is totally normal behavior. 
There are so many reasons why there might be issues- such as 
>the original client no longer uses this particular version 
>other software upgrades may have broken or corrupted the license module. 
 
We simply have no way of assisting you with this particular issue I'm afraid, as this is NOT a simple reset of a license- but a specific connection to an old and mostly obsolete database. 
The only option available to you is to contact the actual owner of the license, who, perhaps still has access to the old licensing modules.

In the days of Synergy (which was a server environment) this was hosted entirely by the client- (not by SDL). 
SDL simply cannot help you with connection/licensing issues in this scenario. 
Even though servers (and remote connections) are far more stable today, than they were 10-15 years ago (after all Synergy was retired over a decade ago) there is absolutely no guarantee ever, that you won't have to reconfigure a connection after disconnecting/rebooting. 
All we (SDL) can keep advising you to do- is you contact your client who is running Synergy and who has given you access/licenses.

 Could you ask your client if they can supply you with a dongle instead of a license key? They may have one in their possession that you can plug into a USB port and that would stop the software trying to connect with the obsolete site. 
 The URL programmed into the software would have worked at one time when it was the SDL licensing site. The link now takes you to a FLEXnet site requiring a password: 
 
 SDL aren't obliged to solve this problem and, as Paul Filkin told you in his first post in this thread, very few people if any now working for SDL Support would have any knowledge of Trados 2007 in any case. 
 Do you also have SDL Trados Studio? The ttx files used for translation in Trados 2007 can also be worked on in any version of SDL Trados Studio and the Workbench translation memories and termbases can be converted for use in Studio and MultiTerm. This is the solution to continuity provided by SDL.

 Ah, so you were working remotely, you should have said. It is very important to give the full facts when asking for help, particularly with a piece of software that is close to obsolete. 
 Trados TagEditor was created when remote desktop connection was still in its infancy. RDP is at version 10 now and has changed infinitely so it's no surprise that the two are not compatible. It's not a deliberate limitation, it's just something that can happen when using a very old piece of software. 
 I don't know if one can convert a Trados 2007 Activation code to a floating license nowadays but, given the fact that you don't own the license yourself, so have never paid for it and you have no SDL account, the owner of the license would have to do that. 
 It was clever of you to find out what the problem was and to find a solution.
