That means nothing.  Studio 2019 is a different product with a different signature.  If your security software doesn't like it you'll need to make sure it's properly whitelisted.

Sure.  You should just be able to start 2017 and it will use the 2019 licence (unless you are still using the old 2017 licence).  Don't actually enter the activation code.  As long as you returned the licence for 2017 in the product and you have activated 2019 then 2017 will just work.

Paul, thank you for the prompt response. Currently my 2017 is shown as activated in the dialog, and both licenses are shown as "in use" in my account. Are you suggesting I deactivate 2017 in the dialog box, or return the license using the button on the account page, or both? I am a bit hazy about how these functions interact, and it's not an area in which I feel I can/should indulge in spontaneous experimentation.

Please deactivate both activation's within your Studio software-

Then process the upgrade in your SDL account/licenses-

Now you will see the 2017 license has been removed from your account and replaced with the new Studio 2019 license activation code.

Assuming now that you have Studio 2019 installed on the same PC as your Studio 2017 license, when you activate Studio 2019- this will also allow you to run Studio 2017.
