Trados 2019 Freezing or take minutes until working again

Hi

I have reported this problem already last year. When I confirm a field sometimes (not always) Trados takes minutes until I can proceed with my work. Even the task manager is blocked (in case I want to kill the program and restart). In some cases I have to restart Trados to continue work because it takes too long.

What is now different:

1. Instead with Trados 2017 I work with Trados 2019

2. It is a new installation from scratch on a new hardware (new laptop with i7 8th generation, 16 Giga Ram, 2 SSD - M1-bar with software and windows installed and Samsung SSD for data, internet 50 MB fiber optic). So I do not think the hardware is the reason.

3. Software running: Windows 10, Trados 2019, Dragon, Firefox and Opera open

Any idea?

Thank you

Peter

  • Hi Peter,

My guess would be that the interaction between Studio and Dragon is the problem.

Studio's user interface is very old and does not play nicely with Dragon.

I have turned off Studio's "bells and whistles", like fragment alignment, match repair, autosuggest, LookAhead, and still run across some jobs that Dragon hates. I am in the middle of one right now where text dictated into a target segment can take up to 30 seconds to appear (it appears in small chunks), sometimes the editor loses focus when confirming, sometimes Studio freezes like you describe. (With a job like this, it sometimes does not make sense to use Dragon to dictate into Studio.)

When Studio freezes, I generally exit Dragon, watch in the Task Manager (Details tab in Windows 10) until the "natspeak.exe" process has terminated, then run Dragon again.

You just have to live with it as best you can and find workarounds. As far as I know, SDL has no intention of updating the decades old Studio user interface any time soon.

  • Hi Bruce
    Thank you for your answer.
First at all sorry for late reply but for any reason. Different than before I get no email when there is a reply to my problem.

Well Dragon works fine - in Trados 2017 before and Trados 2019 now. I dictate and the result appears at once. It even differentiates between upper and lower case when the dictation starts (a few versions before and even on website a new dictation starts with upper case letter, no matter where in the text.).

The freezing (or abnormal waiting time - I don't wait several minutes to continue my work) happens when I click CTRL+Enter to confirm a field and mostly if there is more than a few text in the field. I worked around yesterday by not confirmimng a field when done but marked many fields at once and used "change segment status". Then the problem does not occur, but I did not find out yet whether repetitions of confirmed text will be populated automaticely that way.

What I have seen now with a new translation job (less text) the delay occours when there is a mistake dedected (double space or different). After the waiting time a red triangle appears aside the field and shows a failure notice. Maybe I have to do anything with the setting of spell check or grammatical errors.

By the way only Trados freeze - not the system. The note that I cannot access the task manager was wrong. New computer - different keyboard :( ;)

Any idea please let me know. I am on the trace.

    Thank you
    Peter
