AutoSuggest "Generate" button is grayed out

Hi,

In Studio 2019, in File->Options->Language pairs->Spanish/English->AutoSuggest Dictionaries the "Generate" button is now permanently grayed out (also in Project Options), although a couple of days ago, while I was still using the free trial, it wasn't and I was able to generate and use a couple of dictionaries. (This is a new install, novice Studio user.)

I understand that AutoSuggest is now part of Studio and so is not something I need to buy and install separately.

In an old post from a couple of years ago it is suggested that deactivating the Studio license and then reactivating it may solve this problem, but in my case it hasn't.

Is there anything else can I try? Thank you!

  • If nothing has changed recently, when I pre-ordered Studio 2019, they promised me a reward:

    Dear valued customer,
We are aware that you have been patiently waiting for the release of SDL Trados Studio 2019 Freelance. To show our appreciation, once Studio 2019 has been launched, we will ensure you also receive our AutoSuggest Creator add-on for free.

It would be a very weird sort of reward, if they give it for free once the pre-sale is over.

  • Agreed. It also seems strange to me that SDL should include an optional, paid add-in in the Free Trial (without mentioning that the add-in isn't part of the product you're trialling), while Multiterm, which is, is not included in the trial version.

This feature is part of the Studio Professional version and the trial is a fully functional Studio Professional.  Once the trial is over and you have purchased a Freelance licence the features available to you revert to whatever you have purchased and you will lose anything that was a Professional feature.  This article might be helpful:

MultiTerm is a separate standalone product (also sold separately) which we give to all users who purchase a Studio licence.  You do not need a copy of MultiTerm to trial the available features of Studio.

  • Hi

I asked our CX team to look at this one and see why you have not been given this capability. It looks as though you should have it... I'm sure someone will be in touch in due course.

  • Hi

The guys checked your account and you have not processed your 2019 licence yet, so I can only assume that you are either still using the trial, or you are using 2017.

If it's the trial and the feature is greyed this would point to your TM being too small to be able to generate the dictionary. Try a larger one... the minimum size required is 10k TUs.

If it's 2017 then the same thing would apply as you do have the licence for this.

I don't really follow your thought process though. Why would it be weird to receive after the pre-sale is over? As long as you purchased it pre-sale, but just didn't activate it until now, then the entitlement is there. Or am I missing the point of your comment?

  • Hi Paul,
Yes, you are [missing the point]. I don’t complain about not receiving Autosuggest. I only say that AS was sort of freebie/incentive for pre-sale? Right? If so, hardly can others now expect to have AS for free just out of the box. Hope now my thought process is clearer. No complaints, just trying to be logical.
  • Hi

I see... I totally missed the point! Agree with you though.

  • Paul,
There's no indication on the website pages for finding out about and downloading the Free Trial that it's a "Studio Professional" version. The Free Trial is downloadable from the Studio pages without any indication of which version it is, or even that different versions exist. As far as I remember, there was no indication during the installation process (and certainly not during use).
The article you link to is interesting but not something anyone who's in the position of a first-time buyer is going to find or read. And a first-time buyer wouldn't know whether the information applied equally to the 2019 version, as it relates specifically to Studio 2017.
Since Multiterm wasn't included in the free trial even though I gathered it was included in the product I planned to purchase, my concern was rather as to what other features might not be included. It never occurred to me the free trial might include features I wouldn't get when I purchased the product.
Maybe I omitted to investigate sufficiently before buying, but I feel misled by the free trial.

I'm sorry you didn't see any of the information avaiable to you when you decided to take the trial, and that you now feel misled, but we do provide many of the answers to your questions on the trial website.

The trial can be found here:

    https://www.sdltrados.com/products/trados-studio/free-trial.html

On this page it says that the trial is "fully functional and offers every feature of the product for you to try."  You're right that this doesn't mention which version but it is quite clear that the trial offers every feature available.   I'll suggest to the marketing teams that they update this page to make sure this is clear beyond a shadow of doubt.

If you visit the FAQs to learn more about the trial you are interested which is here - https://www.sdltrados.com/support/faqs.html - it says:

SDL Trados Studio is available in three different versions: Starter, Freelance and Professional. The reason behind having separate versions is that freelance translators do not usually require all the functionality within the full Professional license such as working on a company network.

View the comparison table to see the different functionality between the different versions.

It actually mentions more than once in various places on this page so if you had taken a look I'm sure you would of seen it.

The feature you mention, Auto-Suggest Creator is actually less important in Studio 2017 upwards because the upLift feature, which you get with the freelance version too, provides something very similar and with the added benefit of being a a feature that builds in realtime.  So you don't have to keep generating dictionaries for use.

Are there other things you wish you still had now that you are running on a freelance licence?

  • Dear Paul,
I don't deny that the information I failed to see is in fact available somewhere on the SDL website but I do deny that it's anywhere near as prominent as it should be.
The one thing the links you provide show very clearly is that the Free Trial is not presented on the website as a trial of a "Professional" edition, or of any other edition, of Trados Studio. It is presented quite simply as a trial of "Trados Studio" and from the "Freelance" edition pages.

Screenshot of Trados Studio ribbon with 'Activate', 'Deactivate', 'Options', 'Help' and 'New' buttons visible.

Banner image for SDL Trados Studio promoting a free 30-day trial of SDL Trados Studio 2019.

Header text stating 'SDL Trados Studio 2019 30-day free trial'.

Text snippet from SDL Trados Studio website stating 'The trial is fully functional and offers every feature of the product for you to try.'

    Etc, etc.
It's true that the FAQs page includes, in one of the FAQs, a link to a comparison table in which "AutoSuggest (Create)" is listed as an add-on, though with no further explanation and no link to pricing information. Only someone who already knows the software quite well will know that "AutoSuggest (Create)" refers to the specific functionality I found available in the ribbon in the free trial version. Given the huge range of features and the different levels of each feature, I don't think it's reasonable to expect a freelance buyer to know that this row in that table refers to the "Generate" button that appears in the AutoSuggest Dictionaries dialog in the apparently version-free trial version.
You say "It actually mentions more than once in various places on this page so if you had taken a look I'm sure you would of seen it". Can you tell me exactly what page you are referring to and exactly where it is mentioned that the AutoSuggest Creator or associated functionality is not part of the trial version? I don't find it anywhere.
Finally, if, as you say, the AutoSuggest functionality is no longer so important, why is it still priced at 200 euros? Above all, I disagree as to its importance, as the results from AutoSuggest are considerably better with a dictionary than without one. That was precisely one of the reasons I decided to purchase, based on the trial version.

I'm glad you've decided to tell the marketing teams to improve the marketing material but I think the point I'm making is more substantial than you have admitted. Again, I may have purchased too hastily but I did honestly think the AutoSuggest functionality was part of the product I was buying and am disappointed to find it isn't. To seasoned Studio users that may seem ludicrous but the trial version is precisely aimed at people who are not seasoned users and so should avoid any possibility of misunderstanding.
