Question for input (outside current beta process!) on Studio editor behaviour

Hi all,

I have a quick question on how you use the Editor in Studio. We recently (re-)discovered the behaviour that you always have a lag of approx. 1 second when using the mouse to click in a segment other than the currently active one. We were now wondering if that is still required in this day and age, or if we could change it to be instantaneous in a future release.

A bit of background: originally, we thought that a small lag might be useful to allow the user e.g. do a double click or drag/select text without the segment getting active. This would then e.g. allow you to stay in the current segment as active but e.g. quickly copy/paste content from another target segment and paste it in the active one, without the other segment to get active, perform lookups etc.

In a recent experiment, I was looking at a build where the lag was no longer present - and I thought that this made the Editor feel 'snappier' when navigating with mouse clicks. But I was wondering if we can make the change just like this or if there are use cases where our user community would feel that they would still need that lag for your use cases.

I hope the question is clear enough - and am looking forward to your feedback and input!

Thanks

Daniel

  • Hello Daniel,
the question is very interesting, and I think answering would require a test.

For sure there's the need to feel the editor "snappier", despite the numerous latest improvements there are still some laggy moments that could ruin the perception of a fast editor.
For sure there's the need to not start unwanted processing that gets activated when a segment becomes active when you don't want to.
Maybe it could be possible to move the waiting time (the small lag) from the activation of the segment to the activation of the slower tasks like lookups and such...

In the way I'm used to work when reviewing segments and performing correction this waiting time is highly perceived, while in translating segments in sequence this small lag is not a big deal.

Editing Source is really laggy, but I don't do that that often.

Could it be possibile to have a beta with an option to activate/deactivate the segment activation time in order to test it?

Thanks to you and SDL for the effort into making Studio faster and reliable. This is very appreciated.
  • Hi Daniel,

A very interesting question. I must confess that I had never noticed this and trying it just now, I don't really see a noticeable lag, but I'd have to try the alternate behavior to really give an informed opinion. Based on your description, I wonder if it would make sense to reduce lag time depending on the mouse action, so, for example, no lag if one just clicks on a segment, and the regular lag if one clicks and holds the left mouse button (which would show an intent to select text, for example).
  • Hi Daniel,

I think this would vary based on users and on the way they work.
I know that some (most?) translators basically never use the mouse, but almost only the keyboard (and shortcuts).
I still use the mouse in Studio, and as you said having a delay of 1 second is useful to copy/paste text and keep the current segment active. On the other hand, having a snappier Editor experience sounds thrilling.
Would it be possible to be able to adjust such mouse lag in the program settings? This way, users could customise such behaviour according to their needs. If not in a public version, at least in a future beta, so that we could see the difference in action during our daily work.

    Thanks and regards,
    Marco
  • Hi Daniel
From my point of view no lag is required, provided the termbase search will be exactly as fast as the TM search.
So I would welcome a Studio version with no lags in any part :)
    Best regards, Jerzy

  • Interesting question Daniel. As others have said, I'd like to try both versions out, and preferably have a permanent setting allowing us to switch between the two and adjust the speed.

I just checked, and the lag is indeed useful if I want to quickly double click on a word in a non-active segment and copy it. If it got activated the second I clicked in it, this would not really be useful.

How about this: Change it so there is no lag, but … allow the user to activate the lag ad hoc by holding down the shift key before clicking in a non-activated segment (for cases where the lag would be useful)? Everyone happy.

    Michael

  • Thanks all for your input so far! Great and much appreciated - let me mull over it/discuss with a few people here on our side...

  • I do make quite heavy use of the "double click a word" or "select a group of words" and copy in a non-active segment and return to the active segment. Michael's suggestion of using shift to do this would work well if the active segment change is made instantaneous.
Good idea to make Studio feel snappier!
