Merging segments across paragraphs bug

Hi, I'd like to report a bug (see the subj.) in Trados Studio 2017 (14.1.10012.29730)

Description:

I''ve got a series of paragraphs (e.g. Para1, Para2, Para3, Para4, Para5), each of them is a separate segment.

I want to merge the segments Para1 and Para2. This works ok.

Then I notice I have to add Para3 to the merged segments 1 and 2. I cannot do it: 'Merge segments' is greyed out.

Then I undo 'Merge segments' - and Para2 disappears.

P.S. The behaviour of Trados Studio 2019 15.0.0.29074 is exactly the same.

  • Hi

Do you have 'Enable merging segments across paragraph' ticked in your Project Settings?

Trados Studio Project Settings window showing 'Enable merging segments across paragraph' option unchecked.

Also, have you checked that the segments you're unable to merge have no content between them that will prevent merging? You may be able to see this by selecting the 'All Content' display filter here in the Advanced Filter:

Advanced Display Filter window in Trados Studio with 'Show All Content' option selected in the right pane.

or here in the Review toolbar filter:

Trados Studio Review toolbar with filter options, highlighting the 'All Content' filter as selected.

And/or, if you received a PDF with the translation job, you can check that to find out if there is anything present that isn't in the SDLXLIFF content, for example if the segments are in different sections or on different pages or separated by some other content that has been set as non-translatable.

I hope this helps - sorry if I'm telling you something you already know...!

    All the best

    Ali

  • Hi, Ali,
Of course I've enabled it - otherwise I wouldn't have been able to merge the paragraphs in the first place.
I am not talking about a translation I received this time - a few days ago I'd encountered this bug in an actual translation but since I was too busy, I just recreated the project and just tried to be careful to merge everything I needed to merge right away. This time I tried this functionality (or lack thereof) on a test file (a Word 2016 document that contained several paragraphs I'd written; I imported it into Trados and began my experiment, its results are described in my original message.
As I said - if you try to merge another paragraph to an already merged paragraph, Trados won't allow it, and then when you try to undo the previous merging, Trados DOES undo the merging, but the second paragraph (paragraph 2) just disappears from the editor. This is definitely a bug.

OK, I just wondered if you knew the difference between simply merging segments and merging paragraphs. Had to rule that out.

I expect  or someone will pick this up now and look into reporting it as a bug.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

    Ali :)
