Different file formats for source and target document

Question

Here is my dilemma. A client sent me a Word file (source) and an sdlxliff file (target). The former is an updated version of the former. My question is: how do I "merge" the files to create a single translation file?

If you have the professional version of the software then you would create a new project with the Word file, and then add the SDLXLIFF during the Perfect Match stage. This will match everything that had been done before to the new file and just leave you being able to see the changes to work on. 
 
If you have the Freelance version then you create a new project with the Word file. Then create a new Translation Memory and import the SDLXLIFF into it. Then pretranslate the file against the Translation Memory and finsh off whatever is not populated as this would represent the changes.
