Fixing wrong country flag

Can some admin please (re)file a ticket to fix the Scottish Gaelic (gd-GB) flag to NOT show the Irish (ga-IE, 3 vertical bands, white orange green) flag but instead the correct Scottish flag (diagonal white cross on blue)? This is really beginning to irritate me, both in Trados and Multiterm.

    Hi ,

    It's an interesting discussion on where Scottish Gaelic came from. I'd like to think it is its own language and should only have the Scottish flag and not the Scottish flag with the Irish on top of it (particularly because I am Scottish). But I'm not sure it's been proven that Scottish Gaelic predates any influence from Middle Ireland. But having said that it is ridiculous to mix the flags up when there is no Scottish on its own anyway. I think the best way to address it is if you raise an idea on the ideas site:

    Then we can let the product managers decide with their extensive knowledge in this area ;-)

    I'm sorry? How can I put this... there are a lot of English people and they have no idea what the relationship of Middle English is to Ingweonic and how this relates to Common Germanic. This kind of thing isn't magically imparted at birth... No mainstream Celticist or linguist doubts that the origins of Scottish Gaelic, Manx and Irish all lie in Middle Irish and that speakers from Ireland migrated across the Celtic Sea, bringing with them their language, which would eventually evolve into Scottish Gaelic.

    But what's the point of raising this point of history? Whatever the history of Scottish Gaelic may be, today it is a distinct language spoken in Scotland (and some tiny pockets in Nova Scotia). It has it's own ISO code. Trados treats it as separate languages. It is recognized by the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005, the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Neither the NI Assembly nor the Dáil have jurisdiction in Scotland - or vice versa. Linguists treat is as separate and you'd have more of a chance arguing that Norwegian and Swedish are dialects of the same language than that Irish and Scottish Gaelic are the same.

    This isn't an idea. It's a bug. Irish and Scottish Gaelic do NOT have minor differences (like currency symbols or ss vs ß like Swiss German vs German German). The Irish flag simply has no place on a flag symbol for Scottish Gaelic. And if the product managers ok'd this in the first place, I somehow doubt they have "extensive knowledge".

    How can I put this... my response was a little tongue in cheek. It's fine if you think it's a bug, and has no place being portrayed is it is... but do you want it changed or not? I'm happy for you to leave your comment here as it doesn't bother me as much as it does you. I just told you how to get this raised in profile. You do what you want with that information.
