If I insert special symbols/characters into my file from the Advanced ribbon, Studio, by design, places those symbols in the ribbon, making it easier to insert them again later on.
My question is: Is there nay way to get rid of them again? Resetting the ribbon, among other things, did not help. They appear to have become permanent fixtures in my Studio.

I must be missing something. My Advanced tab doesn't have any option to insert special symbols/characters. Is it something I said?
In fact, I just found I asked you about this in November 2016 for Studio 2015 - I am still getting the same behaviour as then.

I did find this in the code:
If user = "Simon Cole" then don't display Insert Symbols
We can probably remove it in a future version of Studio but I don't have any timescales at the moment ;-)
I also found the old post which didn't get answered... sorry about that! I note you tried the reset so I'm not sure why this didn't work for you. Can you try a proper reset? Rename this folder (just add _old to the end or something, it's not important what you rename it to) and restart Studio:
c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0
If you're not seeing something it must be related to these setting somewhere. One other thought that did occur to me was whether you tried to use the appstore plugin in this version, which you should not do. If you did then remove the plugin from the packages and unpacked folders here:
c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14\Plugins\Packages\
c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14\Plugins\Unpacked\
