Term Recognition not working

I have been constantly annoyed be term recognition not working consistently. I am an intensive TD user and might have many TDs opened sometime. What I observe is too too often - Term existing in the TD are now recognized - not highlighted and not in the Term Recognition window. But I can search for them and here they are!!!!
This was the case with 2017, with 2019 and now with 2021.… still not fixed.

Earlier, the speed of the various screens, adding a TD or refreshing a TD was a major issued and that has been handled once for all - great.

Now that issue on TD is the next one inline to be resolved as well once for all, as what the use of a TD and the system can't use them properly?!

If you are experiencing the same problem - please post it  - so we can get this resolved!!!

  • I want to add that I tried restarting, rebuilding the TD from scratch, installing successive version of Trados (i.e. full reinstall), reindexing the TD, changing the depth of search, etc... nothing fixed the problem permanently.

Finally here is another example of simply a buggy software – term perfectly recognized on one segment, and not recognized a few segments later:

Trados Studio screenshot showing term recognition inconsistency. The term 'National Inventory Control Point' is recognized in one segment but not in another.

Trados Studio screenshot displaying a term recognition error. The term 'control' is recognized in the term base but not in the segment being translated.

  • This is the oldest Trados bug I know of. It has been happening for so many years now it's a sad, sad joke. As I have said elsewhere, many times over the years, until they change to a more modern underlying technology, this problem will not go away. Trados termbases are based on some kind of ancient Microsoft Access or Jet technology. However, since Trados termbases are basically MultiTerm termbases, and changing the underlying tech would thus involve completely changing MultiTerm, I doubt they will ever do it in our lifetime.

    My recommendation: just use memoQ.

  • We did within this lifetime, it's called Trados Terminology which is available as part of our cloud offering and free for any purchase of Studio. It retains zero underlying technology from MultiTerm. I appreciate it's not file-based, but still should be a good option for 99% of users.

  • Indeed, I got my hopes up a while back, thinking exactly that: Yay, they've created a new terminology system, it's cloud based, so it must be based on new tech. However, to my dismal surprise, after a few days the old problem reared its ugly head, in exactly the same way: Terms which I knew were in my (now online) termbase were just not being highlighted in the source box or shown in the term recognition window. SO FRUSTRATING. So, back to memoQ I went, where terms are always, and I mean always recognised.

Every 6 months or so I give Trados Studio a spin, but for well over 10 years now, I have never once gotten term recognition to work reliably enough to be usable in production.

    Hi Michael,

This may be something that RWS Support could help you resolve, so start a new thread explaining your issues and giving any extra info particular to your setup that may be useful ... Click the +New button top right of your screen to create a new thread, ask your question again and someone will contact you from RWS Support.

The staff at RWS can only generate one Support Case per thread so this is why you need to start a new thread.

If you want to learn more about term recognition or any other aspect of working with Trados, can I also suggest you take advantage of the new ideas for training hub that  has recently set up, where people can add requests for informal training sessions:

    Design your own training!
You've done the courses and still need to go a little further, or still not clear?
