Trados Business Manager (TBM) has reached end of life. Following the discontinuation of TBM sales on 31 October 2023, all maintenance and support services will conclude on 31 October 2024.
What Does This Mean for TBM Users?
We followed the video about license activation via TBM Licensor app. Although license appeared to be activated on our SDL account, it was still inactive in TBM.
We have successfully reset the license. Should we use Trados License Manager instead of TBM Licensor?
Any update? I just need a quick answer if Trados License Manager is the right tool to activate TBM license?
Trados License Manager should not be used. Only TBM Licensor. After activation, TBM Licensor still shows unactivated state? Should look like this:
If not, you can ask support engineer via chat to reset your license: www.trados.com/.../
Activation via TBM Licensor did not work. TBM Licensor showed "UNLICENSED". We have already reset the license and are looking for a solution.
We tried again via TBM Licensor, and here os the error message:
On RWS account license is IN USE again.
Yep, I also had exactly same error few times with other RWS products. Only support engineer via chat can help with such problem. On forums we can't help with such things. So please reach them, usually they help quickly with such error.
Now this... With the help of RWS support, we managed to activate license via TBM Licensor, but TBM "clients" still show NOT LICENSED. After activation, TBM site was restarted in IIS. Any clue?
In IIS, it is needed to restart not TBM website, but TBM application pool. If you restarted only website, can you please restart app pool as well and tell us if it helps?

I think I understand why the application is still shown as unlicensed. Can you please tell which user is selected in the Application pool advanced settings?
When licensing utility is launched by you, it starts from the currently logged in user, but when TBM launches licensor to check license, it runs from the app pool user. If app pool user has no access to registry, then it fails and says that the app is not licensed.
So, if default user is set there (AppPoolUser, or something that), then it's necessary to change it to a user with more permissions. You can first try with Administrator to check if it fixes the issue, and if succeed, create some other user and use it for the Application pool.

Yes, on my test servers I usually do the same, select Custom account here and just provide Administrator credentials in the modal dialog. The restart app pool again. Except licensor, ApplicationPoolIdentity usually has no access to the SQL server, so database connection also does not work with this default user.
I added my admin account and It finally worked, thank you for your help.

Good question, which I don't know how to answer :) When you link Admin to the tbm process, this process has all the admin rights, and in case of hypothetical attack, this process will be able to do anything with your computer, as Administrator can do. I'm not sysadmin and don't have enough experience configuring users and roles in Windows server, but I think the goal here is to create a user who will be not an admin, but has enough rights to access database and licensor (for licensor, I think it requires to access registry, but not fully sure, because licensing code is created by Trados developers, we just use it in TBM). Good point for me to ask Trados developers which rights are needed for licensor to correctly work. I'll ask and update this thread when get answer.
I tried to inform SDL support about the solution and had some related questions, but they already closed the case. Maybe you can give me some answers:
- When the trial expires, if we decide to buy the license, will we have to activate a new one?
- Will we be able to do it ourselves with TBM Licensor or will we have to contact the support again?
- On our SDL account, trial license is still available. Is this normal?

Yep, deactivate current one, activate new one

Yes, no support needed, just run licensor and replace license key on your own, should take 5 secs 
if no errors of course

Probably not normal, but doesn't matter, as it's just a trial and I think it will expire soon Or maybe you had 2 available activations?
