Setting to change order of responses in a forum thread?

Is there a setting somewhere in the forum (I haven't found it) to make sure I see threads in chronological order, with older posts shown first and nothing skipped? It seems to me like some of the forums in the SDL Community show me the posts in a thread in such a whimsical order that it's difficult to know who said what first, I have to keep looking at the time when things were posted to make sure I'm reading in the right order.

  • Hi Nora,

I am afraid the order depends on what the person who replies is replying to.
See for example some recent threads in the Beta Community (only available to Beta Group members):
    https://community.sdl.com/sdl-groups/studio_beta_group/f/37/t/5921#pi6615=2
In that thread, the reply by Walter posted on 9 Dec 2015 10:08 AM appears before my reply posted on 9 Dec 2015 9:15 AM.
Walter mentions my reply, so the reading of the thread is very confusing, since you first read Walter's message mentioning my reply, and then my reply. And, finally, a reply by Daniel posted on 9 Dec 2015 9:04 AM (before both the above replies) appears as the last reply.

This is indeed far for being clear. I guess the solution might be to always reply to the last comment in a thread, but on the other hand the fact that you can reply to a specific comment is useful. So I am not sure how this can be solved. Probably the tool that handles the forum should be instructed to always publish comments chronologically in a thread, ignoring the comment you are replying to.

    Regards,
    Marco

  • So it seems the comment you are replying to has no connection on this behaviour, as I originally presumed.
It looks like the order of appearance of the various comments is now in reverse chronological order.
  • I wonder if marking a reply as the Suggested Answer would also play a part. I'll mark one of yours, Marco, just to check.
  • Marking a reply as the answer doesn't change things, it looks like newest to oldest is the default order.

  • Hi Nora and Marco

Marking a reply as a suggested answer does not change the order but it has another unwanted side-effect: you need to click on "All responses" in order to see all posts. I remember that this had already been discussed and Paul explained that this is on purpose to avoid that you see dozens of posts once a question has been answered, while only the last answer may be of interest. I understand this and fully agree .... but this should only happen once the suggested answer has been "verified". Currently, as soon as someone replies and marks this reply as "Suggested answer", the forum already switches to that mode, which means that you always need to click first on "All Responses" in order to be able to look through the thread. I think this should also be changed.
