Can you send me any error messages you are getting so we can have a better idea of where this is coming from. There isn't a general problem with handling an SRT file in 2024 or 2022, so we're going to have to gig into your environment a little to understand where this might be coming from.

Trados Studio crashes constantly and for apparently no reason when translating SRT files

Dear colleagues,

Every time I translate SRT files in Trados Studio, after a while of work (or sometimes even when I just confirmed the first segment), Trados crashes, freezes and closes.

This crash usually happens just after confirming a segment, but it has also occurred while I was just modifying a segment. I looked up on the Internet to see if anyone else has had the same problem, but I could not find any help.

My Trados version is Trados Studio 2022 SR2 - 17.2.11.19134, and I do not use the Subtitling plugin (the cons of using it outweighed the pros).

I translate several other filetypes in Trados, but so far, I only have had this recurrent problem with SRT files, so I guess it might have something to do with it. I already tried repairing Trados installation, but this buggy behavior keeps happening.

Does anyone know what could I do to prevent this behavior?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Trados crashed a couple of times today while I was translating several SRT files, so I am afraid this issue has not been solved in Trados Studio 2024.

I am using Trados Studio 2024 Freelance - 18.0.2.3255.

Kind regards,

It has been a while since I last translated subtitles in Trados, so I cannot say. I checked Cumulative Updates for Trados Studio 2022 and there is no mention for "subtitles" nor "SRT", so my guess is that this erratic issue should still be happening, since there have been no fixes/improvements to that matter.

I updated to Trados 2024 recently, so let's hope this issue won't happen in this new version (unfortunately, I am not very optimistic for that outcome, TBH).

Thank you for picking up this thread!

I'll add my response here again. Let me know how it goes.

Possible Cause:

This error typically occurs due to corrupted user settings or configuration files within Trados Studio. Resetting these files often resolves the issue.

Here are some options you can follow to fix the problem

Option 1: Reset Trados Studio to Default Settings

Step 1: Close Trados Studio

Ensure that Trados Studio is completely closed before proceeding.

Step 2: Rename the Settings Folder

Navigate to the Settings Folder:

Press `Windows Key + R` to open the Run dialog.

Type `%appdata%\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio18` and press `Enter`.

Rename the Folder:

Find the file named `UserSettings.xml` and rename it to `UserSettings_old.xml`.

Alternatively, you can rename the entire `Studio18` folder to `Studio18_old`.

Step 3: Restart Trados Studio

Launch Trados Studio.

The application will create a new settings folder with default values.

Check if the application starts without the error.

Option 2: Delete the FilesView Configuration File

Step 1: Close Trados Studio

Make sure Trados Studio is not running.

Step 2: Navigate to the Local App Data Folder

Press `Windows Key + R` to open the Run dialog.

Type `%appdata%\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio18` and press `Enter`.

Step 3: Delete the Layout Configuration Files

Look for files related to layout and views, such as `BaseSettings.xml`, `Plugincache.xml`, or specifically any file that references `FilesView`.

Caution: Deleting these files will reset your layout customizations.

Step 4: Restart Trados Studio

Open Trados Studio to see if the issue is resolved.

Option 3: Repair or Reinstall Trados Studio

Step 1: Repair Installation

Access Programs and Features:

Go to `Control Panel` > `Programs` > `Programs and Features`.

Find Trados Studio 2024:

Scroll through the list and locate `Trados Studio 2024`.

Repair the Installation:

Right-click on it and select `Repair`.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the repair process.

Step 2: Restart Your Computer

After the repair is complete, restart your computer.

Step 3: Launch Trados Studio

Open the application to see if the issue has been resolved.

Option 4: Check for Conflicting Plugins or Add-ons

Sometimes, third-party plugins or add-ons can cause conflicts.

Step 1: Close Trados Studio

Make sure Trados Studio is not running.

Step 2: Disable Plugins

Navigate to the Trados Studio plugins folder:

`%appdata%\Trados\Trados Studio\18\Plugins`

Temporarily move any third-party plugin files to another location.

Step 3: Restart Trados Studio

Launch the application to test if the error persists.

Studio Subtitling plugin throws fatal error

I had to restart my machine and when I tried to open Trados 2024 again, I am getting this error message.

Here are the specific settings in the template:

- Client GroupShare TM.

- Length verification check.

- Local termbases.

- AutoSuggest dictionary

- Specific batch processing settings.

The only difference with the template I use for regular projects (i.e.: not SRT files) coming from this client is the length verification check, and I am not aware of any interference of this check with Trados normal operation.

I'll try recreating the project without the project template, but I doubt this has anything to do with it.

In the meantime, any other idea or suggestion would be most welcome!

"Question improvement suggestion": Please provide more information about the specific client template you are using. Are there any specific settings or configurations in this template that might be causing the issue?

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

Hello Manuel,

Thank you for providing more details. It seems like you've done a thorough job of troubleshooting already. Given that the issue is specific to SRT files from Plint and doesn't occur with other file types, it's possible that there might be something in the specific client template you're using that's causing the issue.

Step 1: Try creating a new project with the same SRT files but without applying the specific client template. If the issue doesn't occur, then the problem might be with the template.

Step 2: If the problem is with the template, review the settings and configurations in the template. Look for anything that might be specific to SRT files or that might interfere with the translation of SRT files.

Step 3: If you're unable to identify the issue in the template, you might need to create a new template for this client. Start with a basic template and gradually add the specific TMs and other resources, testing with an SRT file after each addition. This can help you identify which resource is causing the issue.

I hope this helps! If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

The SRT files I work with are usually small and simple files, since the videos I subtitle are rarely longer than 5 or 6 minutes. They never contain any special character or formatting.

All these SRT files come from a subtitling platform called Plint. I opened them in Notepad++ and they all seem fine and adhere to the SRT format structure.

Like I said in my previous message, I keep having this crashing issue with all the subtitling Trados Studio project I work with. The process is as follows: I download the SRT files from Plint, I create a Trados Studio project with them applying a template for the specific client (specific TMs and other resources) and just translate as usual. Please note I never have this problem with any other project/file from this client.

Any other ideas? They would be most welcome!

"Question improvement suggestion": Please provide more details about the SRT files you are working with. Are they large or complex? Do they contain any special characters or formatting?

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear that you're still experiencing issues with Trados Studio crashing when translating SRT files. Since you've already tried the common troubleshooting steps and your system is up-to-date, it might be an issue specific to the SRT files you're working with.

Step 1: Try opening and translating a different SRT file to see if the problem persists. This can help determine if the issue is with all SRT files or just the ones you've been working with.

Step 2: If the problem is with specific SRT files, try opening them in a text editor to check for any unusual characters or formatting that might be causing Trados Studio to crash.

Step 3: If the SRT files are large, try breaking them down into smaller files. Large files can sometimes cause software to crash.

Step 4: If none of these steps work, it might be a more complex issue that requires further investigation. You could try reaching out to other users in the RWS Community to see if they've experienced similar issues and have any solutions.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

Hello Manuel,

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with Trados Studio crashing when translating SRT files. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve this issue:

Step 1: Ensure that your Windows is up-to-date. You can check for updates manually from the Start button, type 'Check for Updates' and select the option offered in the search window. Install any updates found and restart your computer. Repeat this until there are no other updates.

Step 2: Try repairing your Trados Studio installation. You can find instructions on how to do this in the article titled 'Repairing your installation of Trados Studio'.

Step 3: Check that you have the .NET Framework 4.7.2 (or later) installed. If not, please install it.

Step 4: Refresh your .NET Framework installation. You can do this by typing 'Turn Windows features on or off' in the Start button and following the instructions provided.

Step 5: If the crash can be reproduced at a specific segment, check if your Translation Memory (TM) or Termbase is corrupted. You can do this by disabling one by one the TMs and Termbases and checking if the crash persists. If the crash does not occur anymore after a TM or Termbase was disabled, it is corrupted and has to be recreated.

Step 6: If your translation resources are not stored locally, on your computer, but are on a shared drive, network or cloud-based file-sharing storing facility like Dropbox, take the resources locally and test to see if the crashes still occur.

Step 7: Reset Trados Studio to its default settings if you suspect a problem with the installation.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, please provide more information about your operating system, any recent changes to your system or software, and any error messages when Trados Studio crashes.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

I clicked "Deactivate All" in the Trados License Manager for licenses that are no longer needed, but I received a pop-up message as shown in the screenshot below.

Additionally, is there a way to delete the cached license data registered in the Trados License Manager?

I look forward to your response.

Let me know if you need any further assistance!

However, I cannot find this file type in my Trados Studio 2024 (version 18.0.0.1013) on Windows 11 Home (Japanese).

The only subtitle file type listed under Options - File Types is "Subtitles v 1.0.0.0".

Because of this, I am unable to use the "Save Target As" function to create a .srt file to verify my translations.

I would appreciate it if you could advise me on how to resolve this issue.

Thank you in advance.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I now understand that there’s no backward compatibility for file types in this case.

I ended up doing exactly what you suggested—I sent the translated .sdlxliff files back to my customer for them to generate the final version of files for my check/review. I’ve also asked them to avoid creating future projects with the old SubRip file type.

Thank you again for your helpful comment.
