When uploading any supported file type (for ANY project ), this will be converted to an .sdlxliff file for translation.

Once the translation has been completed, and you have generated the target translation, you will have both the source file and target file in native source format* and the accompanying billingual.sdlxliff file in the project folder along with the .sdlproj

E.g.

1) Original source file

2) Generated target file

3) Billingual .sdlxliff file.

Starting a translation using the Translate Single Document command bypasses the selections you have to make when you create a project using the New Project wizard.

About this task

When you use the Translate Single Document workflow, you can create and save an *.sdlxliff file which contains source language segments only. From this, you can create further *.sdlxliff files for different target languages.

Note:

When you drag a file into the Welcome screen, a copy of the file is created at %username@\Documents\Studio 2021\Projects\DropFiles. You cannot drag this copy into Trados Studio , because Trados Studio will see it in use, even if you close the original file from the Editor. The files in the \DropFiles\ folder are not automatically deleted, so it might be a good idea to periodically clean the folder to avoid buildup.
When you create a translation using the Translate single document method, a project is automatically created for you and the *.sdlxliff file is added to it. The project is given the same name as the file you opened. Settings for your active file can then be specified in the Project Settings dialog.
The options that you define in the Translate Single Document dialog when you first open a file for that language pair, become the default options for this language pair. The settings are displayed in the Options dialog and are used if you create a project.

Procedure

Do one of the following:
- Go to the Welcome view, and either browse or drag and drop the file you want to translate. In the Translate files dialog, select Translate as single document.
- Go to File > Open > Translate Single Document.
Do one of the following depending on the available dialog:
- In the Open Document dialog, select the file, and then select Open.
- If the Select Project File dialog is displayed, an *.sdlxliff file has already been created for this file. To create a new translation, select Create New Project File and select OK. To open the partially translated file, select Open existing project file, and then select OK.
In the Translation Memory and Document Settings dialog, check the value in the Source Language box. If the source language is not correct, select the correct language from the drop-down list.
In the Target Language box, select the required target language from the drop-down list.

Note: If you want to create an *.sdlxliff file that has no target language, you can leave this box blank.

If you want to use a translation memory (TM) during translation, select the type of TM to use in the Translation Memory and Automated Translation section:

If...	Then
you want to use a TM stored locally in a file,	Select Use and select File-based Translation Memory from the drop-down list. Select a TM from the Open Translation Memory dialog.
you want to use a TM stored on a server,	Select Use and select Server-based Translation Memory from the drop-down list. Select a TM from the Select Server-based Translation Memory dialog.
you want to use a file-based TM with different languages than the ones in your project,	Select Use and select AnyTM: Any file-based TM from the drop-down list. Select a TM from the Open Translation Memory dialog.
you want to use a server-based TM with different languages than the ones in your project,	Select Use and select AnyTM: Any server-based TM from the drop-down list. Select a TM from the Open Translation Memory dialog.
you want to create a new file-based TM,	Select Create Translation Memory. Create a TM in the New Translation Memory wizard.
you want to create a new server-based TM,	Open the drop-down list for Create Translation Memory and select Create Server-based Translation Memory. Create a TM in the New Server-based Translation Memory wizard.
you want to use an SDL WorldServer TM,	Select Use and select SDL WorldServer Translation Memory from the drop-down list. Select a TM or TM group from the Select WorldServer Translation Provider dialog.

Select Settings if you want to modify the settings of the TM. Select Import and Export to import data to or export data from the TM.
If you want to use automated translation (AT) during translation, select Use and select one of the following from the drop-down list:
- Select SDL BeGlobal Enterprise to connect to SDL BeGlobaL AT server. Use the SW Enterprise Translation Server option if your company has purchased an installation of Language Weaver Enterprise Translation Server and installed it on a server. Use the BeGlobal Online option if you or your company has purchased the BeGlobal hosted services (Software as a Service). This requires a user and API key for authentication.
- SDL Language Cloud Machine Translation to connect to the SDL Language Cloud machine translation engines included in your account. The SDL Language Cloud AdaptiveMT engines learn from your post-edits and adapt to your translation style and terminology.
- Select Google Translate to connect to the Google Cloud Translation AT server. This is now a paid for service that requires an API key. The API key you enter here will update all other projects that use Google Cloud Translation.
  Note: Using Google Cloud Translation, SDL Language Cloud or an SDL Automated Translation Server may violate your non-disclosure agreement with your translation customer. Check with your customer before connecting to these translation providers. The *.sdlxliff bilingual file records if you have used one of these providers during translation.
If you want to use a termbase during translation:
1. Select the Advanced button to display the Project Template Settings dialog.
2. Select Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Termbases from the navigation tree. The Termbases page is displayed. Select your termbases.
If you want to specify additional settings for translation, select Advanced to display the Project Template Settings dialog. Make the required changes and select OK to close the dialog and save your settings.
Select OK. The translatable content of the source language file is identified, segmented and placed in an *.sdlxliff file.

Results

A single-file project is automatically created for you. The file is opened in the Editor window for translating.

- SDL Language Cloud Machine Translation to connect to the SDL Language Cloud machine translation engines included in your account. The SDL Language Cloud AdaptiveMT engines learn from your post-edits and adapt to your translation style and terminology.
- Select Google Translate to connect to the Google Cloud Translation AT server. This is now a paid for service that requires an API key. The API key you enter here will update all other projects that use Google Cloud Translation.
  Note: Using Google Cloud Translation, SDL Language Cloud or an SDL Automated Translation Server may violate your non-disclosure agreement with your translation customer. Check with your customer before connecting to these translation providers. The *.sdlxliff bilingual file records if you have used one of these providers during translation.
If you want to use a termbase during translation:
1. Select the Advanced button to display the Project Template Settings dialog.
2. Select Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Termbases from the navigation tree. The Termbases page is displayed. Select your termbases.
If you want to specify additional settings for translation, select Advanced to display the Project Template Settings dialog. Make the required changes and select OK to close the dialog and save your settings.
Select OK. The translatable content of the source language file is identified, segmented and placed in an *.sdlxliff file.

Results

A single-file project is automatically created for you. The file is opened in the Editor window for translating.

Note:

You must save the *.sdlxliff file if you want to keep it. If you close the application without saving the *.sdlxliff file, it will not be available the next time you open SDL Trados Studio.
The target language of the file can only be changed if the file has not been saved with any target language content.

Starting a translation using the Translate Single Document command bypasses the selections you have to make when you create a project using the New Project wizard.

About this task

Note:

When you drag a file into the Welcome screen, a copy of the file is created at %username@\Documents\Studio 2021\Projects\DropFiles. You cannot drag this copy into SDL Trados Studio , because SDL Trados Studio will see it in use, even if you close the original file from the Editor. The files in the \DropFiles\ folder are not automatically deleted, so it might be a good idea to periodically clean the folder to avoid buildup.
When you create a translation using the Translate single document method, a project is automatically created for you and the *.sdlxliff file is added to it. The project is given the same name as the file you opened. Settings for your active file can then be specified in the Project Settings dialog.
The options that you define in the Translate Single Document dialog when you first open a file for that language pair, become the default options for this language pair. The settings are displayed in the Options dialog and are used if you create a project.

Procedure

Do one of the following:
- Go to the Welcome view, and either browse or drag and drop the file you want to translate. In the Translate files dialog, select Translate as single document.
- Go to File > Open > Translate Single Document.
Do one of the following depending on the available dialog:
- In the Open Document dialog, select the file, and then select Open.
- If the Select Project File dialog is displayed, an *.sdlxliff file has already been created for this file. To create a new translation, select Create New Project File and select OK. To open the partially translated file, select Open existing project file, and then select OK.
In the Translation Memory and Document Settings dialog, check the value in the Source Language box. If the source language is not correct, select the correct language from the drop-down list.
In the Target Language box, select the required target language from the drop-down list.

Note: If you want to create an *.sdlxliff file that has no target language, you can leave this box blank.

If you want to use a translation memory (TM) during translation, select the type of TM to use in the Translation Memory and Automated Translation section:

If...	Then
you want to use a TM stored locally in a file,	Select Use and select File-based Translation Memory from the drop-down list. Select a TM from the Open Translation Memory dialog.
you want to use a TM stored on a server,	Select Use and select Server-based Translation Memory from the drop-down list. Select a TM from the Select Server-based Translation Memory dialog.
you want to use a file-based TM with different languages than the ones in your project,	Select Use and select AnyTM: Any file-based TM from the drop-down list. Select a TM from the Open Translation Memory dialog.
you want to use a server-based TM with different languages than the ones in your project,	Select Use and select AnyTM: Any server-based TM from the drop-down list. Select a TM from the Open Translation Memory dialog.
you want to create a new file-based TM,	Select Create Translation Memory. Create a TM in the New Translation Memory wizard.
you want to create a new server-based TM,	Open the drop-down list for Create Translation Memory and select Create Server-based Translation Memory. Create a TM in the New Server-based Translation Memory wizard.
you want to use an SDL WorldServer TM,	Select Use and select SDL WorldServer Translation Memory from the drop-down list. Select a TM or TM group from the Select WorldServer Translation Provider dialog.

Select Settings if you want to modify the settings of the TM. Select Import and Export to import data to or export data from the TM.
If you want to use automated translation (AT) during translation, select Use and select one of the following from the drop-down list:
- Select SDL BeGlobal Enterprise to connect to SDL BeGlobaL AT server. Use the SW Enterprise Translation Server option if your company has purchased an installation of Language Weaver Enterprise Translation Server and installed it on a server. Use the BeGlobal Online option if you or your company has purchased the BeGlobal hosted services (Software as a Service). This requires a user and API key for authentication.
