I'm not sure how plural forms of terms are handled by LW. I'd be pleasantly surprised if LW was able to take the singular and derive the plural from it when needed. If that's what DeepL does then it's pretty clever.

The two following term has been added to the dictionary:

Source English "trans"

Target Italian "persona trans"

Example sentence 1: In 2019, we surveyed nearly 3,000 trans and nonbinary people from across Canada."

Italian Jan/Feb 2023: Nel 2019, abbiamo condotto un sondaggio su circa 3.000 persone provenienti da persona trans e di genere non binario provenienti da tutto il Canada

Italian today: "Nel 2019, abbiamo intervistato circa 3.000 persona trans e persone non binarie provenienti da tutto il Canada."

Example sentence 2: The closure of the Connect-Clinic is likely to make accessing health care even harder for trans and non-binary people."

Italian Jan/Feb 23: "La chiusura della Connect-Clinic renderà molto più difficile l'accesso all'assistenza sanitaria per le persone persona trans e di genere non binario"

Italian today:" La chiusura della Connect-Clinic probabilmente renderà ancora più difficile l'accesso all'assistenza sanitaria per persona trans e persone non binarie"

So, there behaviour of the dictionary function in Language Weaver has changed a little bit since Jan/Feb, when Serena wrote her dissertation, but the plural forms are still not recognised.

She carried out the same tests using DeepL with dictionaries, and the results were slightly better.

You can find more examples in Serena's dissertation "Gender bias in machine translation: an investigation of the causes, characteristics, and effects of gender-biased MT output" starting from page 92 "De-biasing the system: DeepL glossaries and Language Weaver dictionaries".

In the meantime, can you provide some example text and terminology (we don't need a complete document just a few sentences and terms to reproduce the problem)? It should replace so if we can repro the issue it's a good start.

Unable to open project file in Online Editor

Dear Community Members,

For some reason, I am unable to open my files in the Online Editor when I create a cloud project. The Online Editor button is not activated even when I select the project file(s) for translation.

What could be the issue? I should appreciate your assistance.

Hi Luke

Ana-Loredana may be able to give more detail, but one reason may be the type of user you have been assigned as. With the Academic subscription, you are using Trados Team; the Academic license gives what is called the Premium Editor, which allows access to both Trados Studio and the Online Editor. However, you have to be invited to the Trados Team platform by an administrator, who will place you in a user group. That group will have various rights assigned, and it is possible that they have assigned you to a group that does not have rights to use the Online Editor. To check that, whoever is the admin for your subscription would need to log on to the cloud portal, check what user group they have placed you in and confirm what rights that group has. Specifically, they should look under the Projects tab in the User rights, and check whether this is enabled, as shown below:

If not, they can either enable it for all users of that group, or move you to a different group that has got those rights.

I did not get any specific error message. The Open in Online Editor button remains inactive even when the project file is selected. I am wondering whether there could be something I am not doing right (maybe, the Workflow settings or other settings). What could cause such a situation? Could it be that the Open in Online Editor feature is not enabled for academic subscriptions?

In general, specific education or experience is not required for DTP. However, having knowledge or experience in related fields such as typography, creative agencies, graphic design, newspaper work involving article creation, or experience in a printing house can be beneficial when entering the localization industry and working as a DTPer. Even if you have worked on videos, prepared reports, or engaged in other computer-based tasks for personal use, it can also be helpful. Nevertheless, these experiences are not mandatory, as we also welcome newcomers who are eager to start their careers as DTPer.

The most important qualifications for this role include:

Proficiency in working with text editors on computers.
Basic technical knowledge of computer operations, such as software installation/deinstallation, Windows settings, language settings, troubleshooting abilities, and ideally, the ability to identify the root cause of issues.
Willingness to learn from live projects and apply acquired knowledge to future projects by connecting the dots.
Determination to work efficiently, quickly, and produce high-quality results.
Possessing common sense and the ability to assess the balance between cost and benefit.
Having an aesthetic and detail-oriented eye, as this work often involves comparing, identifying differences, and making adjustments to achieve a polished final product.

Additional skills that can be helpful include experience working with documentation, familiarity with applications like Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Word, PowerPoint, FrameMaker, or expertise in converting PDF files to other formats like Word.

For engineering-related tasks, basic programming skills and understanding are necessary since the work often involves source code or document manipulation. It's worth noting that specific experience is not required, as we provide comprehensive training to new employees starting from the basics. Continuous learning takes place through working on live projects and receiving guidance from experienced team members.

yes, I meant the dictionaries that can be applied to the Language Weaver language models. But as I said, the results were not perfect, i. e. the sentences did not adapt to the injected terms.

I'm afraid we don't run internships in our division for transcreation, but you can enquire about translation internships on the following link. Once you train as an in-house translator, if you display creative capabilities that is something that could be worked on and transcreation opportunities could follow from there.

Yes, it is hard at the start, we have all been there😊.
While you may be looking for a paid job, your best bet to enter an organisation is by seeking an internship within a company to gain experience. You may also offer some volunteering freelancing if they don’t have inhouse staff.
You got to think first about building experience by investing to work for “free” and you will reap the benefits at a later stage.
I would suggest that you revise the tips that we shared in the session Career paths in localization - translator that we hosted and do some networking where you will find job opportunities and peer support along the way.
